Koford Journal 17 November 1968 NW of Tubuwa, Chih, Mexico To highway, at dawn, 32. At one point saw a fox in brushy fields at side, at night. I squashed and it ran toward me, to about 20 yds. Stayed w/ Gray M. 18 November 1968. Mon. In city, shopped, picked up and answered mail. Telephoned Oscar Ruiz, and received permission and instructions for going to his ranch, La Campora, via Cuyca Santa Clara and S. via campamentos Irineo. 33. Apparently tricky + rough road. He advised his caporal, Irineo Ruiz, at Rancho Nereadero, to help me. Drove N. to Nereadero and talked w/ Irineo; he will ride horse directly W. up Campora Cuyca to the ranch, while I go by road. He and Oscar both said bears and trushes had been seen there, but apparently black bears. Ranch lies S. of Monte Negro, E. of Missionary camp. Canyon (7:00 indicated clear at c.g.) I drove up Santa Clara Canyon and camped at lead, to N. of estriaguard. 19 November 1968. Tuesday. Started W. on road, and after about 5 mi. (at second pass or I) turned S. toward "camp 33." Wandered about, searching way, and finally went S. a few miles from a pueblo to a concrete presa in streams w/ water, and just beyond took road uphill and to E. (Camp 33 apparently was down canyon to W. of presa). From I about 25 miles from bd. Santa Clara Canyon by road.) There, about 10 miles rough road to ranch. About 34 there passed 2 old sawmill sites dry good; much scrap and sawdust -- before there a group of olarand olores + corales w/ a black "pila". Refa arrival ranch (a crude sign said "R. Pinolator"), met ranch boy leaving w/ in cart with family, said going to a fiesta or neighboring ranch. He said he saw bear on ranch about July (Irineo later said it was in canyon next to 33) ranchhouse, and down stream to W). He was sure it was "del rambo," and not one of the released ones. No thought all bears there were "negros". I asked length again; he indicated less than 1 long. (Irineo later said he saw one in lead C. Campora about July) Boy (30 yrs.) said he saw trush about April, not since.
