16 November 1968 NW of Chihuahua, Mexico Majalco
Departs 0600 from Chihuahua in Musquiz jeep. Draw N. to
Majalco road, then on bad road to W. Stopped at Cumbre de
Majalco Sangreza, a National Park. Many private sierras houses built there. A small
town of ugly adobes in poor repair. Apple orchards and livestock in some places. Some rock formations painted up with
furniture. This was piñon-juniper zone, with blocky
rock formations, and said to be very popular in summer. The
ranch was 14 miles W. of this. Arrived about 1030. Ranch in
oaks - juniper - yellow pine, oak-yucca - Bouteloua hilly zone and
comprised about 9000 hectares. Fine rock formations. About
500 head cattle. Perhaps 1/8 acres in oats, the rest arable
grain. Found four deer traces, but Musquiz plans to fence
about 3500 acres with 7 deep deer-proof fence and import
some whitetails to stock it. Fence not really started except
posts cut. Several large grazers make good water holes in
canyons. We drove jeep road up and down across north
but saw no deer, quail, or turkeys— all scarce; a last puma
absent. If M. can develop wildlife through habitat improvement,
it would be good demonstration area. [Majalco]
[This place about 25 mi. WSW of La Porrita]
an old hunter at Sangreza
said some rather tame black bears there, but no grizzlies.
He thought there were some in Sierra del Nido to N. Then he told
of a hunter logging a "tigre," with spots, in this region; he had seen
photos of it. He said he had killed about 25 bears in his lifetime. (Hmmm!)
(Shelley, Croke no.)
In evening, squealed in a Urocoya or which Dr. Gilbert shot; prairie falcon.
17 November 1968. Sunday. Saw 10+ ducks, probably diving and mallard,
on pond 1/2 mile S. of ranch house. Kingfisher flew over. Chipmunks
still active. Walked talked, and in p.m. drove back to Chihuahua; about 40 km.
