C. Santa Clara, Chihuahua, Mexico
wee tame. No other reporte. No thought that the Americanos (meaning me, unknown to him) had released the bears. Only he & son ran on the ranch, but he offered horse, feed, y "todo facilidades" to me. | Drove a day to La [okm. 923] Panita, 10.4 mi. from Los Vase (cattleguard 2.6 mi. W of L.P.). Then 10 miles S. to entrance Rancho 45 (about 10 mile E across plain) and Los Vase, owned by A. Raynol. This I talked with Jesus, who told me about seeing grizzly at bull in Mestero canyon, about 1 km. above Kolim, about 10 years ago. Testicles partly eaten and a hole in chest; bull soon died. He told me piece ground across road, at mouth Campora canyon, owned by Maximiliano Sierve of Chihuahua. Samilietre, next ranch to N. of Rancho Elp, owned by Teroya. | Las Vase, small ranch, has much gatuna and spilosoma wounds, desert lice, scaled quail, and sandhill crane (on ground or if feeding). Also a large pond lined with cottails. Jesus said he sometimes saw small "ganza blanca" (=cottails shy gradually cleared?) there. Saw cotton-tails in evening. Set out 5 live traps; camped.
15 November 1968. Cool night, and clear. Traps held Peromyscus and Neotoma. Met Teroya on road; he offered cooperation; said his ranch included lower C. del Muleto. He thought no bears were there. Jesus thought lower C. Campora very poor in animals, and he had heard from Caporal of Oscar Ruiz ranch (R. Campora) that there were only wolves there - one killed in area 2 days ago, he said. Ruiz ranch entered thru Nueva Saniquipa; reached via Peters Canyon road to S. at km. 54 (N. of Chihuahua). | Drove to Chihuahua. Talked with A. Raynol. Then Jose Damian. He telephoned Sieve & got permission for me to work on his ranch. Stopped. Then called in Gilbertt Mungay, who invited me for mediano on his ranch, Las Tierras, 21/2 W of Chihuahua. Stayed overnight.
