13 November 1968.
N. Rio Santa Clara, Chihuahua Mexico.
Store of Monreal (next to Guasavi). Store about .8 mi. E. of this (cattle
and food & hardware). Then an E. toward Parapeto. Bridge across Santa
Clara (intermittent here) was about 3 miles from store. I looked for
old M.V.2 campsite; turnoff was 2.6 mi. from bridge. A new occupied
campsite was near site, so camped farther up canyon. Overcast all day
w. alto-stratus & cumulus clouds; sprinkled in evening; wind
20 kts. afternoon and blowing gray "tumbleweeds" across plains.
Saw no jackrabbits or spilosona along roads today. Heard owls calling
on road near Santa Clara Bridge.
To Chihuahua
14 November 1968. Rain at night; grew warmer to W. of Santa Clara. Woke
to sound of 12+ deer cowbells flying over. Drove to depot E. of
Parapeto ranch. Passed pack w. 50+ donkeys. Windy, overcast, cold. Road
paralleled store well, 500+ yds. to W. Saw Antler in nearby pond. Talked
with Luis, caporal at Parapeto. He said he knew only the plains, not the
Sierra, and nothing of bears; it was his brother Jesus, who saw big grizzly
in Mistero canyon several years ago. (Dr. Souls, incidentally, is curator
of Armando Bayard, latter's own ranch.) Bought
an 11 lb. deer here at Monreal
camp (about $1/lb.). Then looked for and down Santa Clara canyon. Cold,
overcast, & drizzle continued. Altimeter registered 7300' at head canyon; climbing
at least 400' high, pickups in part due to storm.
Proceeded to Los Varas and
drove down to Los Varas.
Talked with locals, who said road extended only 1 km. up C. de los Pintos now, since
summer storms. This canyon borders Nento Negra & El Alamo ranches, and lower
part is on Ejido Los Varas. Then drove back about a mile and entered Manta
Negra ranch, where talked with the caporal. He had been here 4 years and had
never seen a bear, though he said vagueros sometimes saw tracks. He said
that 2 black bears from the state had been released in Novia canyon about
June, at start rains. One man had reported seeing them and had said they
