Rio Santo Clara, Chihuahua, Mexico, 6500'
Talked w/ Juan Baiza & said goodbye. He said Jose Belito of Ortega had a
sheep been trapped on ranch 4 yrs. ago. I drove 7 miles S. from cattle-
(2 presses)
guard; then instead of turning up to L. toward Corral de Beaton, I turned
W. toward Rio Santo Clara. Frequent barred lark & road meadow lark
common, 3 redtails, several sparrow hawks, & flocker 100+ sparrows
(white out tail feather), ravens. 5 miles beyond turn, then colliaguard, &
2 yrs
settle lay about 1 mile W.N.W. river. A poor small adobe town. Belito a rugged
camp rancher type. He no longer had the cuero, but said it weighed about 90 kilos,
gutted, had been about 1'; skotish "lava" being black smoothly and "colado"
on sides; jaw then black bone. No hedtrapped me in upper Los Animas,
another in upper Mesterio. He also mentioned someone killing one in canyon
W. of C. La Medina, and said 3 (no large) period summer of last year on
ranch of David Prieto, to N. Also he described something that had puzzled
me; in some pines in upper Mesterio & Los Animas, occasional tree is
blazed w/ safe and the cut wood drilled w. hole about 3/4" diam., in
which some had waxy substance. He said this was poison in "caite"
and that it slowly dripped out, poisoning occasional animals. I drove
N. to reach D. Prieto ranch. About 4 mi. from Ortega, wooden gate. Another 4 1/2
[ = Rancho Los Animas ]
mi. to adobe ranchhouse on tributary near Rio Santo Clara (6100' mid alt).
Found no water, the waited (the midday). A yard here had 20+ bald spots.
Saw water thrush in streambed (water). Returned to Ortega. Then to about
1 mile E. of cattleguard when road led toward Santo Clara. Soon past
adobe settlement (Camposanto?), and after 5 miles forded the river. Here
(CBK no. 3863)
shot a lne skunkbird. I went straight road, 10 miles to Santa Clara, a larger
adobe town. In town, flocker 200+ blackbirds feeding on dry grassy
ground-seemed to be mainly Brewer's D' & g., but also studied females
(red-winged?). Then to W. & S. about 8 miles to E.W. road and gas
