10 November 1968 A. de Mesteño, S. de Nido Chihuahua, a Mexico
No frost cabin; slight in canyon bottom. Departed 0810 for upper Mesteño.
Ltr. 0810, 0910 (4.7 feetm), saunail flat. Both fair day. Aspen trees loose leaves now leafless, apparently frost caused leaf fall. About 10 min. up Mesteño above O. de la Yegua fork, occasional small pool. On rocky bed, bean dropping, acorn hulls mostly dry, no mold, sweet "boy" smell. 20 min. or another of acorns, 2 more within 50 yds (one had some manganite berries), and another pile 50 yds beyond, all in 40' wide dry streambed. One of finer texture w. manganite, together w. one of acorns (used twice, diff. tone?). Searched loose sand but found no tricole. [There are apparently some droppings seen on trip from del Nido side; no new ones.] Continued on NE to fork (leading toward summit), 10 406. 9 mi., 7700' (7400' wind, elk, at cabin).
Then climbed to W. towards Vanita canyon. On ridge, good stand mangan- ite bushes w. abundant dry sweet berries. Here we recent bean dropping in open on ridgetop (dry; no mold). Crossed ridge to Vanita 1200 (8.8 mi.). About 20 bit. N. wind today. 1220 in bottom of tributary [the trib from lowest pass at head Mesteño] of Vanita, found 2 piles bean droppings 8' apart (dry; not moldy), man ganite content. Then to main bottom, 46' wide streambed with rare small waterhole. House wrens, junior, jays, spotted towhee seen. About 1 mile downstream, acorn bean droppings in loose pile, 4-50' beyond another, smaller. In bottom, principal oak is desertum white oak, small size; no acorns below, but seeds prominent under some (nuts eaten?). 1330, farther down streambed, 2 more piles acorn type within 100'; there well formed but dry. Also one, of manganite, nearby. 1345, another old bean dropping; seems 4 older one of manganite; both near dry streambed. 1405, start of running water which continued about ½ mile. Dry before (w.O. de Kofordor branch) junction, which I reached at 1435. Then dry 6. to cabin, which reached at
