ctoford 24 Journal 8 November 1968 C. de/Alamo, S. de/Midy, Chihuahua which reached 1310, 6.5 mi. - in sight (Joa) colona joint across canyon & N/W. Mon- gazite or ridge w. terrain stiff; dry but sweet. 30 dacilen including farm. In thick bunchgrass, carry of quail, 12+, w. 2 or 3 od. ???. 2 flews, + lots mni gp. (skilled across in crop) or it tramped thru grass. A jr. ? weighed 185 gms. / Caught a racoon moving fast thru bunchgrass atop ridge. Collected a solitaire; first seen this fall. Continued partly cloudy, windy. Walked 2 mi. c. or ridge, then (1430) started s. over the rocky, brushy, dry hills; w. small oakm, tall bunchgras. / Flushed a snipe from grass by luck; it flew 100' & landed. Flushed it again; it flew 100 yds. + landed in grass. No water hole, & bird seemed healthy. / Many Sporzeila in oakm. Collected a larger sparrow, which froze as I circled the tree. Then saw an jir Aquila gliding up Alamo Canyon over cliffs - first seen this side of river. Camp at 5 p.m. (5.8 mi. m red sunite). Clean; wind s.later. Cold evening: Sat, 9 November 1968 Heavy frost, + 2" water frozen in coffee pot. Clean. Cleanup and prepare specimens. Departed Alamo ranch / 100 m. past 1/2 mile S. of house had 100+ ducks including several mallard and pintail ???.; most looked like & mallards or Mexican ducks. / Drove to Paragotor ranch house. Near windmill on way saw unidentified bowl - shaped + flight like butter; uniform dark gray above, light below; under wings near white, bordered in black, with conspicuous black blotch at wrists ^ B; base tail white white with tip a broad band of black ^ = ?. / Don Armado had not come, so drove to Mestuno ranch. Urbano Joa was there and we talked again about bears. He said the animal killed by grizzly included a $5000 bull. Also that the grizzly had a regular hunt from Canyon del Alamo to the Santa Clara River. / Hunters now gone, so drove via repared (some barely passable spots) road up Mestuno arroyo to Colono and camped. Heard Stix call shortly before reaching cabin. Saw cottontail in gress by road. B. lagopus
