CKoford Journal 5 November 1968 Rancho El Mesitago S de Nido, Chihuahua, Mexico ad. (No. 304) Clear night forty morning. 1 Pomerian in 4 live traps set last eve near stream and boulders; 1 jwr too dead discarded. Drove down to ranch headquarters, collecting gross specimens on way. Talked with Juan Baeza. He was not sure when bear killed 16th lead stock (but he - yrs), but thought it was in Mesa de los Vientos. No bear actually known killed them. First four years he saw no bears; then 4 yrs ago, when natural food crops good, about this time year, bears and sign common. Some trapped; some poison put out then, including "palamio" coated on black bean Baeza thought possible grizzly. He recounted having trapped or seeing deer entrails or bait. Another time he put out piece of dead cow poisoned with 1000, or ooh, for a wolf; but bait all eaten up by deer. But no deer reported found dead. No thought none on ranch had seen a bear since 4 years ago. He told of one time when Ramon Pisto offered reward of 500 pesos for a bear (probably black) which was killing cattle. One man tried to trap it and the bear carried off his trap and drag, but was not found. He told story of a black bear which killed cattle; and other times when manner of killing did not suggest wolf (black hindlegs) or lion (which attacks shoulder), but attacked short of cow. Apparently he had never seen a grizzly, deer alive (except possibly the trapped "palamio"). I drove on road from headquarters N to C. las Animas, 3 miles. Then talked with 2 men at adobe hut. One had big rifle, & there was remains of 3a & deer on ground, a dead coyote in fence. Hurin said he had trapped wildcat recently too. He said he had been here 7 months & had walked about a lot but had not seen any bear tracks or droppings, no turkeys, rare trace lion and wolf, but seemed to know the common animals, jorbs and gorillas, but no moposhe. I drove about 1 mile up canyon. Bottom flat & wide, with pine, ooh, brush. Water spotty in streambed. Returning to ranch, saw marsh lands, & near headquarters adult Cooper hawk circling above. Again talked w/ Baeza, then drove to settled 21
