C Koford 20 Journal M\'exico 4 November 1968 A de las Animas 3. del Nido, Chihuahua, 1040, came to half fallen board cabin, covered fast tough, or grassy (grama knee high) flat. Beyond, 4 old log cabin remains. Chabacerry brush. Streamed are 6' wide yellowing willow brusher. Water for about 1 mile farther, opposite cliff with 12+ cave (to s). Cirrus -stratus clouds today; 9/10. Occasional core cores on ground (loquina). A wolf sized dropping, including deer hair, was nearly white. the fairly fresh, why are some white? - dog smell. 1125, 7.8 mi upstream, arrived at fork (but I had marked from above on 2 Nov); 7300' Aspen started here. Went up the N. fork (north end of C de la Madre). Now flocked 12 Cyprinns - all froze first or in ground, but visible; then all flew at once together, giving -- call. Saw Odorileum lot, flying four together. 1150, flushed another cover Cyprinny, including at least 1 adult ?; used "bubble breaking" call on flush. 50 yds on, flushed 2 juvs, then 3 w. ad. ? - doubtless same cover. These in bunchy grass in canyon bottom. Water spotty line; running 2' wide stream farther up. This fork rather narrow + steep sided. I continued on in bottom for 1.8 mi above fork (13.5 from camp), at 7400'. Looked & returned downstream, living 1245, meaning to look for bear sign or way - but found none. This times junction 2.2 mi, cabin about 2.1 farther, lower jet. 7.8 miles upper, + 15 mi. to camp. In ascending slope thru blue oak - many- anita - pinon - juniper area, flushed 10+ Cyprinny; again including an adult male. The covers seen today; all members fly well. On this slope I also found a big Neotoma nest under a 6' boulder. The steers, cows, & cattle dropping were stacked up on all sides as as to fill gap between ground and edge of rock. This is only such nest I have seen here so far. / Pelometh is set at 30"; may be 15% different in going & coming same route; reads highest when ground rough & steps shot; may be 25% higher than true, but more reliable than watch for distance, as does not include steps. / Saw 2 apparent wolf droppings during day (one included bone fragments), and no net apparent tracks in loose dry sand streamed. But no bear sign.
