2 November 1968
A. de las Animas, S. de Nido, Chihuahua,
Mexico
1630, water stopped. 1700, opposite E. end of central ridge dividing N & S branch
of canyon (S arm was direct to h.d. C. de la Madera, x pub for better for beans).
some fair stands aspen, beautifully clean yellow now. Apparently had mis-
ed trail up, so started angling up to S. toward mesa. Took 70 min. of
puffing to arrive -1000' up? Dropped into head of A. del Alamo o.f.t.d.;
& heard Bubo calling. Moon about 1 day short of full. Rebased camp 1930.
3 November 1968. Sunday. Cleanup day. Call w-1 mistook. 3 cowboys come
by; questioned, as said he saw been taken in lower E.A. de las Animas yesterday;
another added wolf and deer too. Moved camp. 4 mi. downstream, where larger
sunshine & head of certain creek. This at foot of trail going over hill to N.W. to horn
A. de los Animas. I walked this trail 3/4 hr. Barbed wire fence on first (low) ridge. Deer
on Los Animas side, & basically juniper - pines - manganite. Dozens acres of
manganite, much w. drying berries, & many fox nests near there. (I think
in general asaculus saw wolf in July). Returned to camp. Collected a few
plant specimens. Clear calm night w. full moon.
4 November 1968. Monday. To Arroyo de las Animas. Departed camp 0750 and walked
NW over humps and down to bottom of A. de los Animas. At tributary junction 0910,
3.9 mi., 7100' (camp 7400). Bottom in boulders stream work - tributaries dry flush-
ed by grassy benches, pines, blue oak & live oaks, junipers, ash. Many cattle
trails & droppings (the cattle close down now). Below junction, running water,
and flood plain 50 yds. wide between cliff walls. "Navajo" rock pillars & form-
ations. Good trail up bottom of main canyon, & water. Groups of chirping
Mexican jays, many with partly yellow bills. One short-tailed grayish jay which
could hardly fly - late breeding! Occasional sandy spots, but no dead trees.
about 2 mi. upstream, water stopped. 3.3 up, tributary (dry) exited from S.
Streambed mainly too rocky for trade. Constantly searched for bean droppings
but found none. About 5 miles up, running water, & 5.6 mi. (pedestals),
