C. Koford 17 Journal 30 October 1968 To Rancho "El Mestazo", S. del Nido, Chib., Mexico to edge plain (cattle guard) at top. From there to Canal de Baños, 28 miles. Visited Raynal ranch briefly; Armands (Ameva) reported Saturday. In bottom to W. of C. de Baños, found dried carcass of Andes bison, & sawd also only going toward Mestizo ranch, grass still green in level 3-4". Canal to Mestizo cattle guard, 10 miles. [Illegible] no Agriphoma no Lupine along the road! Also all C. spilosoma on plains of Providence were gone, & nowhere covered with weeds (saw only 1 animal in several evenings). Lack of Lupine due to high grass? (saw a few at night, mid-October). To ranch lodge, + up to Cano, then on 1/2 mile on unmud road. Hurting back throwing boulders off road, as camped about 1/4 mile above Semmill flat (where would have had much better camping, & a water hole). Clear, cold evening. 31 October 1968. Frost last night, + tracks frozen; couldn't yet. Tried hike (CBK no. 3835) but back too sore. Collected Cordellia woodland near Semmill flat, when saw them last summer. Day clear, mod. breeze. Do saw at least 3 Ctenice in 1/2 hr. in Semmill area. Set 3 live traps canyon bottom on rocks, logs, rocks. 1 November 1968. Frosty morning. Traps held 3 Peromyscus (nos. 3838, 3839). Back still painful, but could walk slowly. Went up Arroyo del Alamo. Saw 3 chipmunks, 1 Cistellus 15, jays, r-s turkey, 2 white juncos, acorn wolphorus, bluebirds, robins, bandtailed pigeons - last in flocks to 20, but occasionally flushed singly from trees. Took W. branch at head canyon & went up to many-anita area. Berries abundant - 50/sq ft. on ground under some buckwheat and sweet; many acres of fairly open stand, with junipers (many fruits) mixed. But found no deer sign. Found lead old road down to C. de la Aniversa (1230). Did not descend, but went E. or Neco to the pass. 2 ravens. No deer but many deer tracks around reservoir, and at head of pool below, large tracks or of turkey or Cathartes. This area at head Ojito draw. Descended this found pool halfway,
