Departed 0830 for hike to summit along rim. Arrived 0945; 2 ¼ mi. by pedometer. No bear sign on route. Summit in line with the band of trees across plain from R. el Nido, about 028°. At top, Presbitrya, sugar pine, yellow pine, oak shrub, bunch grass. N.d. of Olmos drainage to SE of summit about 2 mi. Returned to summit camp (1110). Found dried carcass of Odocoileus spiki in wheat, well-eaten. Descended El Tordito. Saw Odocoileus ?spiki, standing at 50 m., 1315, near big rock from W. store hut 1400, + on to "keybali" camp. Voguine, Rodriguez, dropped by. He had been here a year & had seen black bear in Los Varas & El Nido canyons, but had never seen a deer (nor Espinosa, the other vaguines).
29 October 1968. Departed 0900 for La Providencia, where talked with Fati. Collected a snake clay root (CBK No. 38374) and a shrub (CBK No. 3833). Thence to Chihuahua, where talked with Don Guillerto Musguin. He has received donation of fence wire to keep deer on his ranch W. of Chihuahua. Received copy of the Tabor whitetail monograph (Jim Tabor, et al) for him, & one on golden quail for Jane Davies. Talked with last in affair. He said de la Torre (?), jefe of the delegacion in Juarez, had released 3 or 4 black bear on rancho Monte Negra; also that Crosby had later seen them (?) near ranchhouse plain (released near). I explained dangers of releasing bears where there were already native bears to Davison. He seemed to understand, but wanted written statement from me, as he felt he had no influence. Apparently Fernando Hernandez Crego favored the release.) Shopped, & drove back to La Parita; camp.
