Koford 15 Journal 27 October 1968. Upper Mesterio R., S. de Nido, Chih., Mexico Many droppings in center streambed. Formed, block, with many oream shells. (First dropping found crushed; previously, nearly on nearly flats.) ΒΌ mile beyond, a narrow foot trail up slope, 50 yds. from stream, a similar dropping w/ oreams. Plestio's dump, says? Old. Nearly color few & discolored, with oaram rare length - so may mean bear came up from below. 1025, 73 mi, another pily, w/ oream, in rocky streambed. Again dump, but moisture settled. And another 50's in dry erode bottom. Another 100' on, & another 100 yds. on. Last included mangazite nails, w/ fresh green leaves & some green berries (collected). Plotted 2 droppings in situ.) Adjacent area mainly low oolite brink, but mangazite 500 yds. upslope. 1100, 5.7 mi., 7400' is., another of mangazite in erodibles; a small block dropping, on of fox atop it. Mod. dry, but included green mangazite williamson (J3830) from (cat.) J3831. leaves. Saw of fallen saprobule, redtailed hawk in canyon. 1115, another dropping w/ oreams, same caliber (about 2"), 30 yds. from dry streambed. And 1120 another, tail on faint trail up, gone 100' from stream - this one contained both oream & mangazite. About 16" of dropping, on 2" diam. 1130, 5.75 mi., came to the flat w/ old timber, prob. remains of sawmill. A broad canyon leads NW (rock turns to SW). Saw [Later heard shot to W.; heard hewton were at colato area?] water pools here. Found dead Catobleu w/ head cut off (hunter's work?). Kept on to 7 1200, when steep dry canyon leads ENE & Mesterio narrows & turns SW (6.3 mi, 7300'). A weak trail starts up W. bank & seems to lead toward Ojo de la Yegua area. 1215, started back N., slowly, near streambed, searching for tracks. 1315, in wet sand dry pools, 3 bear tracks in fair condition. Claws about 1-2 in., and one hindfoot measured about 5" wide by 9" long. Obviously dust rein; perhaps within a day. 1435, about 5 miles on back track, came to branch where descended & this time took W. fork (by old divisors). Continued up to rim (1515, 7900'). Then toward camp across saddle on N. side rim - the long way around. Reached camp 1700. 15.7 mi. or pedestrian. [Took Penoyacua, cat no. 3832] Camped same spot; set 1 snags top near rocks & trees... Clear calm evening.
