Koford Journal 24 October 1968 Higuera Canyon, R. del Nido, Chihuahua, Mexico. from the oak, 4 now are left down from lower branch (25') of the pine. They run off in the brush. More cone cover here than anywhere I have been in R. del Nido!! Flushed band-tailed pigeon from nest with a large pin-feathered-gub. Late breeding! Nest only 5' up in small oak. | Much evidence heavy working in canyon, & a recent slide about 100 x 50 yds., completely barring ground, to 5. near terminal point of hike. | At about 700'd I saw that a rock had been moved, searched flat nearby & found pile of dropping bear, fairly fresh (2 whe.?). Mostly manzanita berries; no horn apparent. | Later flushed a skua on ground under another bush; along its flight path I found a tuft of plant fibers, like thistle down. | Took a n.t. beargrubs few under a clumpden; it had gone down hole by large clump grass (CRK3828). (Keyset alin & photod.)| About 1510 I was again heading N. down main canyon. Saw Odosileus on slope. Saw no quail. Reached camp 1710, climbing 196 or pedonite. 25 October 1968. Fri. Cool clear night. Departed 0830 up C. los Vares, which had descended in August. Day until about 1 mi. from camp; the running water, about 3' wide, w. pools large enough to swim. As before, cattle a nuisance as they ran ahead up narrow canyon, at first 4-5, later 12 or so. about streamed 1 hr. out, strewned dry; later ran again for 1/2 hr., then stopped. Shot juv. Cooper Hawk in pine (described). | About 1100, canyon narrowed & bottom looked better for bears; lost cattle; the trees clunkant. About 6400'here, 10 mi. or pedonite. Conifers, oaks, shrubs in bottom. Occasional five straightyegrene (cover nature & speed) By 1200, more open & dry (end of August trip), & at 1210 reached Ej. Las Yaras bordered into fire, prob. boundary of Mexico-Nepa. 10 min. farther S. to good running wate. Many lizards out on rocks. about 6500' attempt palon. 12.6 mi., I turned back N. On way shot a bridled titmouse, the first I have seen here. Chichudes fairly common. Mixed flocks small birds moving rapidly through canopy. Shot a juv. sharpshin hawk near bottom. Flushed 10+ quail [CRK3826]
