Koford Journal 22 October 1968 C. de la Madera, S. del Nido, Chihuahua, Mex. W. canyon where bear sign abundant in August, but found no fresh signs. The old droppings now flat, & seeds (pine) were seedlings. Spots of water in this tributary; no water in main Mader canyon. In side canyon near bottom I flushed 12+ Montezuma quail. Then I went about 1 hr. up main canyon to scout for bear sign. Rather lifeless now, but moderate deer sign present; some ground fur. Usual Apachesaurus, Cyanocitta, & Cypioles. Mostly short elongate leaf oak (Quercus?), whitish bloom. 1 about 300 yds. S. of the pile, flushed 10+ Montezuma quail; all flew N, & apparently all together. No hummingbirds. Few flycatchers. Some wren, warbler, junco. Drove back to float Cator del Nido & camped. 23 October 1968: Cool, clear, calm night. Coyote chorus. Unsurprised and well. Herman trapped a Dipodomys nearby. Departed early for Pradera Heights, to see antelope. Fortino sent Manuel Moya (sp?) with us; he said he had seen two small groups 2 days ago, & recently saw at least near where he saw them. Moya said he saw 3 with 2 kids. We drove toward "Los Indios" and found none in 3/4 hr. Moya said for farther S., in canyon, he always saw them - just for lack of time. Best branch of this road went to a reservoir at La Teresa (sp?); Moya said 6" fish & axolotl there. We saw several ducks in small preserve passed. Cliff-tipped compression violet hid on plain called Cerro Chileno - Herman thought it likely place for falcons. Moya had great interest in wildlife & hunting, but said no bears at that end of ranch. He had heard that Capanosa, a vaquero, had seen tracks near Los Fresnos a few days ago. Fortino, like others, thought that we planned to bring bears in if we found more. 1 Herman & Ellis left for Juarez and Duran, taking bird skins, live mammals in tops, & some herps in formol. 1 I drove to Ranchos del Nido. Food worked out; below house, so return needed. At ranch no one except 2 vaqueros. Capanosa said the bear track was a single one and did not have long claws. He had
