Coford 18 Journal 20 October 1968. To Santa Clara Canyon, S. del Nido, Chihuahua. Clara Canyon & camped. Near Cinal de B: saw Marsh Hawks. Soon after we camped a pickup stopped near us; the man asked if we were hunters; it was his ranch, Monte Negro, we were camped on. It was Mr. Bailey, & he knew of my work here & we parted friendly (deer season opened about a week ago). He knew of no deers in his ranch, but thought Canyon de los Cactus a good possibility. 21 October 1968. New camp saw chipmunk, popauba, collected a few live mice in live traps (for Davis collection). Then drove down canyon observing geys. Just above Prudentia saw a Pyrrhula in bushes in dry area. Tanager brown {Rw-92} rancher that area. Drove on to about 5 mi. shot of La Pinta & collected small fish in Canyon Ozumo. Then drove on to gate to La Cauderica (driving to El Sur for gasoline). We heard her saw black-throated sparrow and other birds, mosquito-like, shrike, marsh hawks. Drove on to Prudentia's height, then turned S. del Nido height. Saw 3 marsh hawks, sparrow hawk, mourning dove, meadow lark, bank sparrow, scaled quail, & others. (Herman shot a scaled quail weighing only 76 gms.) Quail rare in savanjas in grass among branched cactuses. We drove on W. to C. de la Moderna coyote. Along road frequently saw large Dipodomys (prob. spectabilis). A jav. Bubo landed on roof in front of car repeatedly, flying only 10-20' each time, following car to approach within a few feet. Met Julio Loquette, who owns ranch. He was eager to show us a dam, & they had built dams. He wanted to introduce other kinds of animals, and I tried to discourage him. He wanted to poison rodents, kill coypus. ranch But friendly & talkative (in English), & offered full cooperation of ranch facil- ities. He, too, was sting on keeping hunters out. He liked wildlife and wanted to encourage it. He said a herd of about 18 Antilocapra in zone to N. of Lobos. Idencia height. Herman caught big Dipus in live trap by road. 22 October 1968. Cool, clear calm night. We walked up C. de la Moderna to water pile. Road badly washed & probably impossible to drive. We went up the
