20 October 1968. To Santa Clara Canyon, S. del Nido, Chihuahua.
Clara Canyon & camped. Near Cinal de B: saw Marsh Hawks. Soon after we
camped a pickup stopped near us; the man asked if we were hunters; it was
his ranch, Monte Negro, we were camped on. It was Mr. Bailey, & he knew of my
work here & we parted friendly (deer season opened about a week ago). He knew of no
deers in his ranch, but thought Canyon de los Cactus a good possibility.
21 October 1968. New camp saw chipmunk, popauba, collected a few live
mice in live traps (for Davis collection). Then drove down canyon observing
geys. Just above Prudentia saw a Pyrrhula in bushes in dry area. Tanager

rancher that area. Drove on to about 5 mi. shot of La Pinta & collected small
fish in Canyon Ozumo. Then drove on to gate to La Cauderica (driving to
El Sur for gasoline). We heard her saw black-throated sparrow and other birds,
mosquito-like, shrike, marsh hawks. Drove on to Prudentia's height, then
turned S. del Nido height. Saw 3 marsh hawks, sparrow hawk, mourning dove,
meadow lark, bank sparrow, scaled quail, & others. (Herman shot a scaled quail
weighing only 76 gms.) Quail rare in savanjas in grass among branched cactuses.
We drove on W. to C. de la Moderna coyote. Along road frequently saw large
Dipodomys (prob. spectabilis). A jav. Bubo landed on roof in front of car
repeatedly, flying only 10-20' each time, following car to approach within
a few feet. Met Julio Loquette, who owns ranch. He was eager to show us
a dam, & they had built dams. He wanted to introduce other kinds of animals,
and I tried to discourage him. He wanted to poison rodents, kill coypus.

But friendly & talkative (in English), & offered full cooperation of ranch facil-
ities. He, too, was sting on keeping hunters out. He liked wildlife and wanted to
encourage it. He said a herd of about 18 Antilocapra in zone to N. of Lobos.

22 October 1968. Cool, clear calm night. We walked up C. de la Moderna to water
pile. Road badly washed & probably impossible to drive. We went up the
