18 October 1968.
Mesteno Canyon, Sierra del Nido, Chih.,
"sammie flat." Many old boards in grass, and 100+ of these pushed aside or turned over recently, since plant growth stopped - lean? Took h. fork to hunt any water spotty. I took canyon to R. | flushed song of half grown Cystisus:
in grass near bottom. About 10 jars. Ad. D & F stayed on ground; D came toward me on log, wings lowered & fluttering. a "bubble bubble - bursting" call repeated. I walked away, x D flew to catch up. | Explored upper dry streambed,
then went to W. I flushed bandtailed pigeon from nest with eggs! Found a lean dropping - 3 pieces, well-formed, 1 3/4" x 3 1/2", mostly manganite leaves
(+ twigs, leaves) plus one large needle. | 4 jars. (yellow prog, hills) Aphelocoma
shrikes in pines close to me. Saw 1 chipmunk (no liberation yet). Back
to hunt stub (12/12) and took fork to W, where poor trail after 10 min., water
in streambed. Cut up trail to W toward cliffs + trees and arrived at Ojos de la
Yegua (1227). It was a 10' diameter @ trough of clear water, by a "20" "santa" for
fired. big oak & ash near. | abundant deer tracks in mud, but none of slab
or bears. Still no jays, gopher burrows, don'ttails, woodrats (rods). Foggy day
slope for 100+ yds., + trail leading N. toward divide. Mod. crop oocams on big live
oak (3" ovate leaves, undulate margins; acorn mostly purple). | 12:55, started back
to cabin. 1330, sammie flat - then through closed canyon. Some "blue oak" had
heavy crop small acorns beneath. Arrived cabin 1500 - 3.5 mi. from ojo de pedern
etc. | During day, Norman and Ellie saw go-back with squirrel prey in Mesteno
canyon. A few rock squirrels active. | Set up bat net near cabin and saw a
bat near. Found no bats in attic by day (but one in rain room evening).
19 October 1968. Cold clear night, no frost. A group of 14 parrot flies, calling,
over cliffs opposite cabin; don't half landed atop rocky parapet. Nuttall's
called loudly near cabin. | We departed for dawn. First walked about 1/2 mile N., then
up canyon to NW (cliffy sides) to top, arriving 0930, 2.3 mi. from cabin (This
ridge continues with Mesa de los Venados to N.). Sammie flat (of A. del Alma)
