16 October 1968
canyon about (7 15, going W. / Yesterday saw rock squirrel near
Mestero bridgewater, & new flower - not blooming yet, nor discovered.
In early afternoon, fairly warm, but generally cool all day.
17 October 1968. Cold clear night; a few Strix calls. Prepared opening
for canyon
Then hiked up cany and to cabana in Mestero ; left 12 30 / About
mile upstream met 3 cactus trogons, calling in pairs and other than
canyon bottom, open vegetation at least 2 or of. / Don flushed a jiv Acipita
near trail. Chipmunk near old sawmill site (2 mi. from camp). / Mod crop came
(c. 6/sq. ft.) under white oak. We walked to E past north of Ojots (to N) and up
logging road to new crect. E. edge crest 14:40. Started low ridge to SE toward
cabin. Entered stand of piñon w/ good nut crop, many opened nuts on
ground. Saw several Clarke nutcrackers in piñons, and Jim Ellis collected
one (very fat; prob. jiv. 07). New bird for Sierra del Nido list! / We came upon
a jiv. Cystonyx perched atop a 1' rock on grassy slope; Ellis shot it. As we
marched forward, about 12 flushed, and later 2 and 2 - not sure which were
adults. / Reached cabin at 1710, 5 ½ mi. from camp on pedestrian; 7300' indicated
elev. Saw 2 single lute about 7 p.m. Heard Strix calling across canyon.
(5. Hermon had seen Glaucidium about 5 p.m.) Clear, cold night.
18 October 1968. Turkey calls (no gobblers) down canyon in morning; 3 parakeets
flew over cliffs opposite. At 08:30 I left for Ojotes de Yegua. Walked past old MV2
campsite - stream running well. Under oak pine (forests of 3, 5" nutlike) nuts
with stubby spines) about 50 cover of green grass, freshly eaten (Sericea). 09:05,
about 1 mile E. of cabin, apparent bear dropping perhaps 2 wks. old. Black
matrix, loose, full of stones & shells; about 6" x 12" (later photos). This 15
yds. from stream or old logging road. / 09:35, 2 mi. from cabin, 100+ small copros on
E. side stream below cliffs (leaves yellow now). Fair nut crop under white
oaks (leaves yellowing browning, dropping.) / 1000, 2 ¼ mi., out onto 100' yd. grass,
