Journal 16 October 1969 Rancho del Molino, 5 de Mayo, Chihuahua, sun pines. Rising slowly, reached top of old road at (145 - at W. edge of Mesa de los Venados). Bluebirds, juncos campestris & lazulites common. Mesa about 8200'. I walked NE to pass at head of ojos de los Venados. Most of mesa was weedy and moderately dry, with few birds, but green underbrush. Red-bellied woodpecker; large (10+cm) spherical berries on juniper, and [illegible] many on ground (fairly edible). Saw no deer, but trogon & droppings fairly common. 7 ravens flew over. Saw no parrots. Searched for heron sign where found in July; was, but apparent lack of dropping there (grey w. much hair). / Acorn crop seemed light; few on ground, & some small green still on tree. Freshly eaten cone of dry pine cover (barkwise) on ridge. Another bunch w. abundant green (little) fruit. Saw lizard active at 2000'. / About 1339 returned to Mesa de los Venados. On pine tree, according ! trunk in jinks, a Centaurus woodpecker - banded back, black breast, yellow old down, white base tail; dull slate than flasher. Also saw sapsuckers not noted? ! (yellow-bellied?), with red forehead & throat, white malar line, large white patch edge wing. (Jim Ellis thought he saw red-bellied sapsucker too.) / Flash 500 pine siskins feeding on pines buds. / For 200+ yds. around with pool (dammed), vegetation greener, grass prominent, & many birds. / about 1530 I left mesa & descended W. into S. del Abono. About 15 min. N. of camp, in bottom, I saw 2 cardinals sitting on some branch of pine. top both are perched on 30' stub. One ate 1" grub (?) in top of oak tree. Cello: what (tickup! - tail raised 30° upside); about note d-e. In flight, sounding notes e-d-a-g-f (in 2 secs.), possibly synchronized w. wings. 2 sat 2' apart are calling (gray breast). Tail tips white spots conspicuous in flight. Sometimes gave slurred whistling rising note, g-b6, w/o tickup. About 1/2 hr. later 2 trogons (probably same) perched near our camp first 1/4 mile below forest site. / Saw feline (coyote?) flopping over
