Roford 5 Journal 15 October 1968 Rancho de / Mosberg, Chihuahua, Mexico running well, but some dry spots within 1 mile upstream. Good power then in early July; we had to detour a repair works out places. Arrived about 1130 (5.2 mi. above Ldftris.; tot.6mi.from La Parita). Took level walks, reorganized gear, set snap traps. I set 15 near spring + pipe, trying for shrews. Saw many bandtailed pigeons, jays, juncos. Canvies dropping, canow along road. (This morning saw flock of 100+ apparent parrots flying over cattlegrazed to year round) (Yesterday saw flock of 20+ doves in lower Santa Clara Camp). A big frog (Rana pipiens?) fairly common at Elbon. Also saw garden spade bee, + in pond at ranch heights. Near me a wild turkey, in cover- ing. Ash tree + aspen turning yellow./ About 9 p.m. I walked a few hundred yds. up canyon & gave owl hoots. Son heard spotted owl calls from slope to E., in about area of last July. But owls did not come closer. However, after I returned down canyon they followed, + often hooted on steep slope E of us. Usually "" 1', and occasionally the rising whistle. 16 October 1968. Wednesday. Still at Elbon Cold; clear night, but no frozen water. About 0609 a few Stix calls. About 0630, turkey gobble, + now another one; I thought up and across canyon, in area owls first located./ My traps held 2 Peromyscus (stuei?). / Departed 0830 & walked up Arroyo del Abono. Mod. dry; clear. At site old sarnmill 0915. (Stream ended about 15 min. down camp.) Many Steller jays in pines this; a chipmunk too. Sonig, N. upold logging road, four and water in lower part of canyon & at streambed crossing 20 min. up; then dry above. Found no bear sign near water. Saw bandtailed pigeons perched in one pine; others flying common. Brook + ash, 2 apparent Townsend warblers (no black). And Rufous-sided towhees in 10' live oaks near bottom. At 7700 level, white oak (4" leaves; undulated margin) yellowing & browning, losing foliage. Ash tree, yellow-leaved, conspicuous./ Two redtails whistled.
