Koford 1968 Journal 14+3 14 October 1968 Rancho del Mistero, Chihuahua, Mexico about drive high & mostly drawny but short. herboge grown. About 10 Andropogon miles for from Conel to cattleguard entering Mesterio ranch "Little" bluestem common in last mile & near cattleguard. We camped near here. Five every coyote chase to 5. Occasional small owl calls. Stormclouds, calm & clear then. 15 October 1968. Morning clear, dewy. A pechuse w/ canopy came down road w/ Urbano yea, Jr. and sister. U. probably late 20's. He said that Sr. delatore ? (de la Torre) of S.A.G. in Juarez was working with bears, had a bear trap bears on truck, & had bought some from New Mexico (?) to release. De Bear seen Sr. on J.C Canyon road in 1963, sister said she saw with Urbano too at time & saw bear, while he said wooo grizzly. He said that at least 14 head were lost (1961?) to a big grizzly, so they put out 1080 poison in baits & bear disappeared. They also offered reward for killing (grizzly ?) bears & told vagueros to shoot them. Urbano Jr. thought that poison had finished the bears. Re lions, he said no recent trouble; usually bother fairly in drought years. (Was abundant bear sign near MVZ camp in Mesterio canyon result of drought?). He also said a bear killed a calf on the Penitenciero mesa (U. from C.Heytler) a year (?) ago (according to Juan Boeza). Weather - U. said usually last rains in late September, and a frost or 2 by now. Grass very exceptionally lush, so winter feeding probably unnecessary. Turkeys - he said a Mennonite recently on ranch and shot turkeys, which he first attracted with food. / Alarm fall in bird Santa Clara Canyon was light, and also near cattleguard to Bear ranch. / At the pond at headquarters, 2 large sandpipers (white band on spread wing, white breast, bobbed rumps up & down when standing. Vagueros out rounding up cattle, so did not see Boeza. But drove up up canyon to [illegible] to Camp (7300' indicated). Stream still
