Journal 13 October 1968 5 mi. N. Cerro Campana, Chihuahua, Mexico scattering largely of seed coats. Some mainly of tina (costin fruit), purple, or distinct five marks), which is abundant & dropping from probably open stems; good to eat - like grape-flavored guava. Juniper bushes w/ green berries. Moline bushes w/ abundant soft sweet bright red berries (some fallen). Oestillo w/ yellow leaves; a few with red terminal flowers. Red berries on a blue bush. Flores 20" small (shining?) spiny now. Occasional fitches or ocau wood- pine. Flores of 20 to 50 mourning dove. Bare dirt tracks. One hidden by ruins. | Steve Herman saw probable puma Falso rapicamus over cliff. 14 October 1968. Local vaguero, live on Tapia Ranch one year, said he had never seen bear tracks, but formerly there were seen up Canyon Oseuro (runs slightly from here). Next canyon to E is Maria Formon has water year round. We departed 0830, left our cars at adobe, drove other to Chihuahua city. Saw many turkey vultures (no black) on way. Called on Jose Garcia & Miguel Delgado at Delegacion Forestal. No new news of bears. Garcia said he would get more exact info on recent kill of 3 lines (1 adult) and "lamentary cactus" in Monte Negro. He said they had given permit as several colts had been killed. | Stopped, & departed again at 2 p.m. Drove both cars up into Clara Canyon; road now far better than in August. We looked for but saw no trogas. Semi-up from La Panita, elev. 5500'; took a Diadelphe on road (she photographing in sun, noted that she posed tightly curled red tail and hid its head; & Herman photographed this posture). Above Las Varas school (Primavera), parts of stream dry, & in upper mile or two nearly all dry. In upper parts some long-leaved peirier & traliniun, & many jaigo. 18.8 miles from La Panita (elev at 5000') to crest; total 24.6 more via "51" state to Corral de Batas. Sunset 1830, & rain thereafter for ½ hr. Saw Lepus gaillardi at this Corral on on toward Rancho del Merloño. Also a few Dipelamyx on road. Across
