To La Parrita, Chih., Mex.
with Dr. Char. Thack of NM State Univ., when joined in evening by three
Herners and Jim Ellis, U C Davis grad students. Off to El Paso in
morning 12 October and, after various delays, started down road to
toward Chihuahuas. About 30 mi. out, fine sand with many montroska.
atruples w. narrow leaf boden on wings side. Near Sanlaguez, road dives to
100' high & fire ride to N W + E, but saw nice good bodsmithie shrubs.
Over a gas (?) under 5. of town about 100 mi. S. of Juery, 60+ rovers - at first
I thought it must be a slaughterhouse. / One probable Swarman bowls / [faded]
cumulus clouds, & apparent rain over mts. to W. / Arrived at La Parrita

after dark. Drive toward Santa Clara Q. and camped just through cattle
guard. Sprinkling auracut, + much lighting in evening. (Not dry in Oct. !)
13 October 1968. Light rain last night. Coyote chase to Nwd SW about
sunrise. 7/0 scerubos - starter. A sharpshin hawk flew by about 8 a.m.
open grass - brue - oak clump zone. / We drove or about 2 miles to new
site old MV Z camp and camped near 80' red rock cliffs + stream (5 yds.
wide & running well) about 1/4 mile on (2.3 mi. beyond cattle guard 1/2 of route)
about (1 a.m. I started exploratory walks to lower parts 2 canyons leading
= C. Norio e. C. Oscura
sky E, S. by W. from area old camp; the W. are dry wash, the E. are running, noisy
with pools 5-10 m. long + 1/4 + m. deep - swimming with bullfrogs (?) while dove, 10 mm.
long, & many fishs 50 mm. / In bore of thick tall bunch ridge at edge

creek I saw a cold king snake lying quietly. When I disturbed it a
Piranipurus ran out of the clumps and ran about as if confused. I
put smoke in log. The mouse still confused, in open. Saw a leopard?
frog with narrow snout. Hot, humid, ex- starter, but breaking up.
Returned to camp 14:30. Ascoma - many dry on ground, w. some cups
still in trees, and green scraws some tree. Some smell but plentiful.
Along trail in a canyon bottom, fairly abundant probto droppings now.
