Journal Fall Trip to Chihuahua, Mexico (Grizzly Reconnaissance project) October 4 to 11, 1968 Berkeley to Los Cruces N. Mexico picked up car, UC Ytan open pickups, pm of Oct. 4. Drove to Davis to prepare to leave. Departed Monday, 7 October, and drove via Las Veras and Coolinga to Cholame, where visited with Glen McMullen. He had seen adult w/ 4 young bobcats several times during the summer. With him, morning of Oct. 8, visited site of fire in chaparral, grass, and Ceanothus pinus on canyon bank (5 of them a females). Tree with eagle nest (a young batched April 4) partly dead now, but we saw an adult flying nearby. In nearby canyon, saw some - a hot fire apparently - where the best quail hunting had been. (Later Glen McM told us he saw a covey of 150+ quails in the burned area.) The long strip between dry pasture & dry grass hills that was needed to 3 birds at triples last winter now lost scattering of plants up to 8" high, but long plantless areas - Dan said grasshopper had hit the plants, & that the native Polycarya survived best. (On plot enclosed w/ boards & wire on top, had 1½' tall plants.) Transplant rips at edge of a cultivated field were flourishing, however - 3-4' high. And some seeded strips in another cultivated field had triples 3' high (planted last winter). Dan McM said he had trapped 2 bobcats in his yard this year and had shot 2 others - apparently a good year for rodents. A clutch of barnacle eggs in an old shed fledged 8 young. This ties in with accounts of abundant rodents in other areas this year.) Many deer in Los Prietos canyon (saw about 25 driving to Elis ranch in evening.) Quail now in large coveys. Dan said spring seasonal in that first clutch of year was successful. Departed midday 10 October and drove via Bakersfield and Yuba City to Delta Sea. Next day drove via Tucson to near Denning, n Mexico, & continues on to Los Cruces next morning. Final shopping and presentation stayed
