B. Las Animas, about 3000' level, saw and heard one 0840-0925. (Kodachrome of area). We (Rue K & I) on ridge about 1 km distant. He in brushy area in small clearing, apparently alone. Open rather dry country. But note more mutual + gave long moaning howls, about 10 sec., rising about 3 meters, starting about C or D pitch. Usually saw throughout, sometimes going up & down or descending at end.
After followed by 2 or 3 (usually) short barks. Head horizontal between howls. Body "cage can look" in crouching; black back. Called 15 min., then as we stood up on ridge he walked away. But occasionally howled a bark again, & I saw him walking up shallow draw about 500 km. W. of first site, occasionally stopping. We both od divines, but could see him w. naked eye in sunlight in clear air.
Previous day we saw apparent wolf tracks about 1/2 mile N. of Llano in canyon bottom. Many jailer scats along path; like coyote, some w. many non-zootic lesions (now soft & shredded).
In afternoon, cowboys brought me wolf skull of one trapped recently in C. de las Animas, which lies N. or N.W. of C. del Llano.
