Koford 32 Journal 22 August 1968 C. Chihuahua, Mexico. (Had Portuge in gun accident.) water eyed, apparently he had been professional hunter who people called in for predator control. One story told of Benito Cinto of Rancho del Alamo, who employed him: On that occasion he said he saw 3 bears (bird?) which had died of poison. Lopez C. was strong against poison, as no one got meat, hide, or scat out of it, & seemed to blame poison for present scarcity of bears. Wolves he thought must scavenge so not elim- inated by poison. One hunting story w/ photo of grizzly, related to Canyon del los Pintos (w. of Remains). At least two hunting stories involved grizz which came very close to 25 mo., tho he thought them young and w. been mowed. He said find grizzlies in all sites, ridges, cliffs, & bottoms, bears & that active mainly mornings & evenings. He remarked turning over large stones (bird bear?), & leaving hair on salt lumpshe, or grassed. He said trails of 2 kinds "in my district," but gave only clear length as specific difference. Also he noticed an "oro colorado" which he thought a different kind, and said there was a "palomino," a cross between grizzly & black bear. He thought they could still be grizzlies, if not in S. del Nido in other ranger, as they walk from one to another when conditions are diff- cult in one (dry, little food). A range seen Cazor I can't see he mentions specifically. The idea seems that grizzlies gradually retreated N. up the range ending from C. Chihuahua to S. del Nido. He said mounted grizzly from Chihuahua in museum at Santa Barbara, Calif. It was very difficult to get definite answers to many questions as each would send their offer over years. Damian thought main value of L.E. excursions would be a map of sites and dates of grizzly kills, and said he would try to get such. I We said our goodbyes & drove toward Chihuahua, camping in brush desert near (N. of) Villa Ahumada. Some trees bloomed from recent rains.
