Ko ford 31 Journal 21 August 1968 N. Co. Campana, Chihuahua, Mexico Disserted red-rock range of La Campana, but no sign to suspect gypies are there. Is about 15 sq. miles of undulating ground on top and main searching ground. Horse trails at pass nr. Rd. Mulato Canyon (from Mente Negra Ranch?). Falco peregrinus (1" dark 1/4 light) Wah - a penguin (?) juv., landed strongly across lower side woods, flew away calling 'Ah?' in squeals repeatedly. But few apterial birds present. Rough sketch. We departed noon and walked to La Mente Negra Canyon, arriving at camp about 4:30 pm. The boys departed for Chihuahua, and later we did too. In crossing rock-grass-shrub slope toward camp, met another oliv Catlin (audible to some at 100'), and flushed a parwill (no white wings). Drove to Chihuahua & stayed motel. 22 August 1968. To office Forestal g de la Frontera, when submitted brief report on results so far, for transmission to F. Hernandez Corzo. Then w. Flavio Di and J. Damian visited Lopez Escolina, taxidermist & former well-known hunter. He lives in fairly nice house, with many mounted heads and such, most poor by U.S. standards. He talked readily and seemed grateful for audience - in fact, garrulous, with a mixture of details, hunting stories, localities, and species, so that very difficult to follow accurately. Much hand waving & acting out - bolt action, loss, lean, etc. Obviously was a fine hunter, as shown by photos of 1938 or so (w. several wolves), but now too old. About 70 now & somewhat
