Koford 30 Journal 19 August 1968 Nv. Co. Campeana, Chihuahua, Mexico. rock running, reared quail, or drive over plain. Met Dan and Florio, and we camped (in rain) at head of Rancho Experimental road at Ft. Co. Campeana. 20 August 1968. Departed about 0800, walked up one slope 40 min. to edge C. Medino and ascended, reaching top about 1100. Low in canyon, 2 spots discovered dropping, mostly consisting of manganese lenses (accumulation from coyote?). Met one of C. molossus the 3' olive Crostethus on trail in canyon, another in grass & rocks just before (molissus) climbing up. Logos ripe low in canyon, but only in a few spots. Fair nos. choke cherry (capulin) bushes, but no ripe fruit. Little water in creek bed, but most vegetation green. Brece - Florio said his party had seen one during hunting trips in early 1960's, and he indicated sites in high rocky area around top of Medino's canyon. Lost in 1965, was tracker only, all were black bears. Mostly rocks bordering volcano red rock formation w/ open stand pines (Crawstings?) Popcorn on N. slope, white pine including Blackstonsia, occasional Cupressus near stream beds. Water in better ed pools, but probably some year around. Few deer droppings (we saw 1 (anter complete) in a day on top, including fine or in velvet). Badger digging, lightning struck tree, & occasional coyote or fox scats. Some largeish nests on ridgetops contained manganese only, it appeared - no insects, birds, hair - so I thought bear improbable. Deer tracks in dense ground, but little else. I saw a varied thrush in conifer, and several sideline lothking in pool. No rain during day; increasing cumulus. No signs hares or cattle. Yucca in bloom. In evening had no coprinus/gills, but with flashlight saw much eyeskin, or of field mice. Camped in cave shelter. During afternoon we explored in different directions in the high rolling country, mostly in area of conifer mangantiar, & stream beds, but no bear sign. 21 August 1968. Wed. No rain night; 3/10 cum status 0700. Max visibility. & headed SW to head of our branch Mulletto Canyon (better deep, w/ conifers in bottom, & math up plain from Santa Clara Canyon side).
