18 August 1968. Sunday C. de la Maderg & de Nido, Chihuahua,
canyon looking W. from camp. Few pines; rocks, brush, rocks. But
intermittent 3' diam. stream, + signs canyoning. About 500 yds. up can-
you found gross smell upon flat, within 50'stream, where 5 piles
Ursus
of bear droppings in 5 yds. diam. Contained mangos & whole berries,
but also small and larger seeds, unidentified, but not known. No
insects or acorns apparent; collected sample. About 1/4 mile up
stream, no more droppings. In later look in lower parts, or shady
flat area by stream under rock found more piles of varying sizes,
at least 20 in all. Some well formed + perhaps only 2 - 4 wks. old,
and others decomposed into components. This is most bear drop-
droppings seen in this area yet, & bears further search in dry canyons or
watches for bears. Perhaps other rather low canyons, under 7500',
also have bear signs searched creek sands but found no bear
traces (many of deer). Many boulders evident had been moved a
few inches or 1 - 2 feet, as if by searching canyoneer, + some of them
weighed 20+ lbs., too much for loadger (stockright do it, but slowly?).
But no signs scratching under the turned rocks. Heard lodger digging
in the area. /Flushed/ quail, later 2, at different points near stream. Re-
turned to camp, which must be in bear travel area. /This morning a good lo-
olive
low camp, one of the + olive Catchers; first seen in this canyon by us.
Also pile coyote droppings, + old skunk carcasses.
19 August 1968. Overcast night but no rain; overcast morning.
Heard whiporwill calling at dawn, about 0600, + hummingbirds buzzed
close at their houses. Packaged to return to La Campava & meet Flavio & Damian
Fortino
this evening, as planned. Drove thru, talking w. Camavillo (El Nido) and Fortinos
(Providencia) on the way - he latter had been here 8 years as foreman of
La Providencia, but said he had never seen a grizzly. As usual, saw
