Koford 28 Journal 16 August 1968. Fri. C. de la Madera S. del Nido, Chihuahua Mexico and Sue, apparently attracted by game call, circled close over trees & us. Rain, light hail, lightning! We descended to a pass & down canyon toward : painted redstart camp; found small spring. Bonetail, black white + red flycatcher, wild (1" long) onions. Nuthatches. At bottom open stand yellow juncos, tall. Red oaks fallen, so every footstep carried a dozen acorns under trees. Varied flickers, acorn woodpecker, Mexican jays, house wrens, spotted towhees. No bear sign. Towel 2 bats (3819, 3820) in mist net over trough in evening. 17 August 1968. Sat. Departed camp 0900 & walked S. up ridge between C. de la Madera & C. del Nido. Rocky, brushy, but good views! On way up, in bottom, flushed Montezuma quail, which landed after 10; fluttered wings; she had 2 at running cheek. I do price saw 2 large jins. Accipiters, calling (Cooper's hawk?)). We were a ridge (S. of old rock area) after 1/2 hrs. from camp. Little deer carnivore sign on ridge, but mangosita ripe & good. Arrived peak (4300' i. el.) 1310. We were at edge head of C. Las Arias; ophrae heads at mesa of Alter Mestera, 1650' from us, about 1 mi. 1650' New chickadees, jins. Buttes, flickers, & varied birds. No water visible, but various pine slopes. Descended first deep canyon W. of us; some brown tracks as if used for travel. No bear sign. Many ripe choke cherries along streambed areas in bottom. Back at camp, visited by Canavilla from C. del Nido. He (19550-57) (say J. Garcia) said grizzly was killed about 1 hr. from our camp, on hill to SSW. He said only springs were in small canyon leading W. from near our camp, & suggested looking for bear sign there. He also said he knew of covers where bears hibernated, & that they contained piles of frescats (branch?). He had guided Allspood on trip to crest on horseshoe. Sums, man, perhaps 40, & slow deer follower; thinks he knows mesa where deers are, & may be good guide. He said bears move about in one month canyon over another the next. No rain night. Bulo called at night. 18 August 1968. Sunday. Sue and I walked 1 1/2 hrs. slowly up
