Journal 15 August 1968 Rancho del Nido, S. del Nido, Chihuahua, Mexico spec. about 100°. Saw 2 small Thamnophilus / Bandtail pigeon flushed from egg w. I saw 2 redtailed hawks. Good trocking ground where water had been higher, but no bear sign. (Probably This into Ej. Las Varas this canyon reaches to R. La Manga.) 1410, started back. Had made 48 cavings. Sawen in creek. Low in canyon, in air, an Aguila soaring near top of red cliffs. Half-feathered Pipilo f. on ground near small oak w. nest + adult. (CBK 3817) 4/10 cannelulas, hunt no rain. / Call henbostine in wet grass up C. del Nido. (Camarillo) 16 August 1968. Friday. Moved to C. de la Medina where local man (Castillo) (He was guide for Adel groups) (in 1957.) NE says MVZ camped several years ago. From house, 3.5 mi. to road (To Renon turn del Alamo), three W. thru oakn (2 mi. from turn), across rough canyons (2). third wire gate (3.9 from turn w.) at C. Peñitas, another gate (5.3 mi.), To side road N SW (5.7 mi.). (This last first gate after living C. del Alamo from the side I think) Then 3 mi. to locked gate, + 2 more up canyon to the "jila" in C. de la Medina, about 7000's el. No cattle here. Grassy flat w. scattered oaks in canyon bottom; e rock spine fish visible 230°. 30-50' fever. Spotty water in stream. Arrived 1045, at end road. 1140, departed for the peak up canyon to SW. Patented trail Brush. Crimson bushkn w. ripe "chile cherrini." Compar- capulin atively dry canyon w. little life, but open stands large pines in canyons mostly oak + scrub on slopes. Going slowly, reached top of peak 21/10 mi. View of Sierra Mojiva, El Carmen, + Laguna Encinadas to E. Three main canyons leading S. We were on road; went 40 min. 5 X(3) Arroyo A. de los Arrieros (a ridge up center makes it appear like 2 canyons) From @, flat of Alter cmp X(2) Terranotes @ C. to W. (near 610m) Mercedes 140°, about 2 mi. One could walk thru w/o losing too much in ups down. Pines area between her. Clearer view to N. edge Mesa de los Venados 9000 i. el. 3 jnr redtails (?) chased, dived, played in wind over rim. 3 parrots over
