Journal 14 August 1968 Rancho del Nido, S. de l Nido, Chihuahua Mexico Looking to summit in a small gp. pinon or rim, about 9200'.el. Pesbel rim 1255, about 4 hrs. from camp. This point at ultimate SE lead of the Mesteno, about 1 hr. NW of Sierra summit, where we passed on trip from Rancho del Alamo (Small Springs 10 & 20 min. toward Mesteno). Found deer carcass near high point trail; perhaps 1 wk. old; coyote droppings of deer hair there, Little Bear sign - I stop rim in grass flushed a quail, which gave "quail" calls & ran back & forth in grass w/ wings low, within 10'of me. I searched for meat and 3 tiny chukar flew. I am a good deer fireplainer at high levels; Rancho del N., del Alamo, Mesteno within 4 hrs. hike. At 1515 we started down to N. on trail. Flushed a Sylvilagus in bunch grass. Both at 7000'; 2 deer stood in trail 50m. ahead of us. Back at camp 1815. No rain during day; but always threatening, every day. Curiously, Damien had apparently not heard of this trail's questionable condition (had not maintained it). 15 August 1968. Wed- Thurs. Departed 0910 to walk up C. Los Vascos, w/ lower shoes for the many river crossings. About 1015, near tributary from R. I saw a trogon flying to a pinion atop red rock cliff, in area orestills, framelioids, oaks, and big cypresser. About 1045, thru narrow part canyon and in flatter bottom, no cliffs, smaller stream, & occasional tributary canyons. (Lost livestock here too.) Continued on about 160'. By 1125, had made 33 water crossings. 1145, groovy flats, sparse woods, damp ground, many 3 spotted red + yellow lilies. Flushed doe w/ fawn, perhaps 20 lbs.; smallest now. I Quail - flushed & w. 4+ do (Smit: smaller arella on wing carried him!) half-grown young; she ran back & forth, wings trailing, as if feigning "fleeing." Within 2-3 yds. of us. | Later, flushed & alone with 4+ tiny flightless young, downy & longit. striped (tried to photo her, & w/ chukar which Eric caught in hand). | Graz, lushness, small odes, ash; stream about 12'mile, shallow here, & canyon opening toward lead, leading
