c. Koford 14 Jaorna 10 February 1962. No Lucknow, India gp. 5+ adult rheseus. Open country; green wheat + sugar cane. Road lined with big mango trees and planted groves similar trees. Khair in Saharanpur district on N.E. railroad. We went to dirty adobe adobe part & stayed at house of Abdul Rahim, bearded Muslim monkey contractor. Lots of flies; mosquitoes at night; only water a yard pump - etc. Supposedly troop monkeys tomorrow afternoon (yesterday it was morning). 14 February 1962. With 8 men in little Ambassador car, drove to main part of Khair (said 90,000 villages). Plenty of fruit & color; lots of cattle; dirt mud; streetside open cooking. Drove on to Lala, then off on dirt road to canal road. Much sugar cane. (Forest about 70' tall, red thick with hardwoods, along parts of canal.) Saw 1 bunch 10+ rheseus eating spilled cane, No jays seen. I Rupta told me the largest monkey "range" was about 14 sq.mi.; Rahim had less here. Saw 4 large langurs at edge forest near canal; about 10' up in trees. Finally arrived at Kairna, where train station. This headquarters of groups of monkey catchers; they had already caught about 15 makayas today & mine apparently finished (11 a.m.). We drove on to Mailani, also near the canal on rail line. At 11:45, left on foot and walked about 1 mile N.W. along R.R. track to large forest patch (70' mixed hardwoods); flat; fairly open; trees to 12" diam. Trees tall & very narrow, leafless low. Mostly deciduous. No camphor. Leaves mostly large (2-3 x 4-5"). The men already had a net set in an open road 100' from R.R. track, but they said a cat had frightened the monkeys away. After much urging, I got them to set another net. They put it on another cart track; I saw at least 3 ad. rheseus near. Set about 1 p.m. Men walked within 20' some rheseus w/o much alarm. Net soft, 2" sq. mesh, with 1/4" ridge rope. Whole about 12' long and 6' wide - too small to catch large groups. Pull wire single, about 100 yds. long. Net + support stakes buried in 2" trench, covered, & leave
