MEXICO.
13 August 1968 Tues. C. del Nido, S. de/Nido, Chihuahua,
no stocks, large Doug fir, pine, madrone, oak. Went SW. Streambed dry. | about
0754 7400' incl., been dropping about 50 yds from creek, or away from clumps
near old bushes. 6 pieces to 4.5x70mm. Ground (robin) some time up
(hodgers ?) nearby. Used manginite fruits in dropping; photosed. Cone cone (parrot?)
rare. Bonetola common, some on nests. | At edge stumbled found possible bear
track (smiley face) 10 cm wide, like bell & teen man's foot (no claw marks). | 1500, found a
spring, 7600'. No bear tracks near. Canyon seemed headed to SW -> E. El Teridero,
but not sure so started back down route up, living 1500 about 6900', 5 yds.
from dry stream under oak, another well-found bear dropping about a wk
old w. many mangy bits berries. (Collected parts of various dropping.) Also found at
least 2, apparently 2 or 3 bears, but degraded into piles. Most bear sign seen yet.
Saw a few whitetails on way down. Many acorns ripe & fallen, but little avi-
ded
dove eating (not good to human taste). Had for 3 gp. well-formed bean pretty
fairly recent. Reached camp 1830.
14 August 1968. (Wednesday). Light rain night. Departed 0850 for hike up
jip road & trail to summit, starting up main del Nido canyon & taking
path S. up "El Teridero." Initial stream 8' wide, clear. After 42 hr, going
250°; then S. up tree road. (Passable dry pickup to about 6700', where small
old stone hut; then worked out). Much livestock. Parrots, turkey vulture,
jays. Oaks, aspens, junipers, increasing pines. Fairly direct ascent. At
7000' slumped across on ground (leaves [illegible] clothy, dark gr. tops, whitish
dolor; acorns yellowish/ot loose). Water ended 7300' (1042). | On mossy
red tent
boulders near bottom, the black & white flycatcher in red abdomen; nervously
fluffy, tail spread (3 white wite restices?). | 8400' indio atteleu, large pine;
2 parrots set together stop 60' pine stub & let us pass 50 yds. Dist
ant (nest area ?). Canyon head V-shaped. Reached high brands when many
small aspen; there a stone pile indicates trail, up right side, switch-
