Ko ford 24 Journal Mexico. 12 August 1968 Rancho Providencia, S. del Nido, Chihuahua, as waited until after 4 p.m.; the boys (Damián & F.Louis) soon overtook us. From R. Providencia headquarters, go W. through gate and after about 200 yds., SW toward north Canyon del Nido in fairly straight line. One muddy crossing w. high center about 13 mi. to this part ranch. Among several rough bldgs., a fairly modern house, present. presumably for owner when present. Fine view up canyon to S. at red cliffs + east of Sierra del Nido, summit lying almost S. of building, but 3000' above. We met fremen (lived only 9 mos.) who let us drive 1 hrs. up the C. Los Varas (E.) fork varas or old road & camp; clean stream 25' wide. Grassland, oaks, cypress; many cattle. Fremen said no lions or wolves bothered stock. Damián & Louis returned to Chihuahua. 13 August 1968. Clear night, cool dewy morning. Camp 65900' i. el. (6=28.5). Departed 0805 for hike up Los Varas branch, said to be 3 hrs. horseback long, and to "always have beautiful" rain pools when water low, according --to Damián. To Danién. (cav.?) The canyon led SW (Negrea fork to S.), then about 200°. Many large fine large 250? cypress trees in bottom, some over 2' dbh. Oaks, yucca, agave (jíjote). Met cowboy Roberto Espinosa, here over a yr. & formerly at R. Temazcate, who said had never seen a bear here, but thought likely in canyons near him to S., & C. Negrea. No sign of no trailer with lions or wolves. | Stream high and canyon walls ravined, so had to cross & recross many times; gave up this route after an hour & returned toward camp, taking S. fork (Negrea) at 2955. Small clean stream; many cattle on in Los Varas. Rough red cliffs, oaks, cypress; poor trail or now. about 1215 reached wide bottom of oak - grass, w. abundant acorns (small, long, thin) about 6900' i. el. on ground & in stream. Bear dropping, still formed; seems to cater small mice, ants?, beetles, monzanita berries (no acorns). Found down cutted log w. many parts pulled off as if of bear (?) searching for grubs and termites. Canyon led split, going on SE up brushy slope, & turning S. between cliffs toward rugged crest. This canyon gentle rise
