11 August 1968. (Sunday)
N. C. del Nido, S. del Nido, Chihuahua, Mexico.
We ascended gravel buried feet up a path to leave rim of Sierra & Tolo
photos. (C. del Nido seems to be north E.). Much green oratillo. Brown woodpecker:

black & yellow bird (nicol ?), 2 miles 100m. lake foot on canyon near us. Then
(from Pajarito gate)
drivel to the road along foothills, + 3.8 mi. to Rancho E (R. del Alamo).
Then 17 mi. NE to highway, + 17 W. to El Carmen for supplies. Small
town but fresh fruits, eggs, staples available, + gasoline. Then 39 mi. to
El Suero. Much grassy rolling country, often well mounded with cactus:
mounders about 20m. apart, long almost no bollatarias. / At first
(N. of Rincon de l Alamo)
sand area (= El Plano ?), saw black-t. jachridlie, + fine 4' Pitupois (?)
fled into rodent burrow.
yellow-w. red-brown large broad spots, while often into rodent burrows.
La Tampaza mtn. rancho, grass green & tall, + pepper bushes to 15'.
Morning dove common. / In morning near R. Rincon del Alamo saw an Montezuma
quail a rood; so probably multiple screeled quail live. / We drove on south
port Providence gate + entered barred wires gate to W., 3.8 mi. N. Panita
mtn. Inn.
1771. Camped among pepper bushes. In eve with flashlight saw 20+
strangero
jays (+ Paragramithers ?) in open near bushes. But Schuyler top + caught
a wood-st. Many burrower mice. / About 5 times during night
we had fine yelping coyote chorus, perhaps 1/4 to 1 mile away.
Overcast all night, but no rain. Clearing next morning.
12 August 1968. Monday. We had done up Jose Damian and friend
Flavio Toralbe overnight trip up Cano Campana, where Flavio said he
drove country from hunting + often (siempre) saw bear tracks mtn.
To's Lake + other places. So went to Agrie. Station sign to wait
any note of Aug. 10 still there. / We saw several Mexican burros near
La Panita. / Didn't come by 1 p.m., now left notes down N., turning to
W. off highway to Rancho Providence (7.4 mi. in) cattle guard about opposite
Hernandez
road E. to Rancho del Alamo). Foreman Fortino (sp ?) still in Chihuahua but upset.
