Koford 22 Journal B 10 August 1968 Nr. Rancho Providencia, 5. de / Mds., Chihuahua explored road to [illegible] ranch & environs. (First gate 2.9 mi.; collieguard, 4.4 from carretera; 7.1 to ranch hdytr.). Saw rookuma; red tail hawk. said chicken. No adult ? at ranch; hunting deer, 3 families then in family nest walls area w. orchard tree, 1 hour - 1 1/2 or femperts nr. La Benito. 1 scaled quail near bk crossing; 1 rookuma. / From ranch down NE, about 305°. Passed wood gate 2.3 mi.; another in rock wall, after 7.5 mi. (crossed 1 mi. S., at summit 215° vogueti). About 11 mi. from hdytr., ground larks, red; many pepper lizards. Jackrabbit (black tailed); 2 burrowing hawks. Many mounds of small Citellus spilosoma ground squirrels scattered along route, its few squirrels out mid-day. Saw many longclaws, meadow larks; shrikes. Continued on 13.6 mi. to a plastered rancho nr. windmill in plain; then turned SW & drove 84.5 mi. to headquaters of leon's del Alamo ranch. White-winged dove in yard. Only one resident family. No lion, wolves, bears, they said; this ranch includes grassy dells but not the oak or pine belts to S. They said R.O. del Rio about 1/2 hr. by car, the third anago. / We went that way. 7 hour gate, creek. 7 km 4.5 mi. from bowers, a track leading W. (a presa to E). .3 mi. on, gate; 4 entered aridated soils. 6.3 from ranch, gate; just in creek. road to S. up canyon. (horribly 1, 1.5 mi. S. of as we finally took) We explored 3 mi. further on, but found no roads leading lower peaks, so (= ? pajarito) back to the 6.3 road. Went about 2 1/2 mi. up that road & camped in grassy among oak & big mesquite tree. (Still looked yet, up road; said old mine [myaganese mine]) sheafle + pile of red rocks (?). / About 8 p.m. I stepped on a Catehua in grass nr. lizards, 20yds from stream, & it struck my pants' leg; collected this one, which is fourth kind we have seen. But let not cross stream, but no catch overnight. Much porwill calling in night. New mine flushed 3 outbred white tails, saw with fair fable but still in velvet. Overrode today saw 10+ scaled quail, never over 2 together. Also saw rookumas sitting cullipedia on top of wooden fence post ! Some rain eve. 6200' inside: all at camp. specimen coll. 3816
