Koford 16 Journal 1 August 1968 Rancho El Alamo, C.delAlamy, Chihuahua. hills much, and often hunted for volces + living, but last possible grizzly seen was 5 yrs. ago (judged by color). He said grizzly leaves clear marks intact, but black does not. About 3 yrs. ago he found red one tree much scratched up & limbs broken or if lay leaves, but found none. He said that "El Mochs" the grizzly, lost finger in wolf traps. I left foot at 13 40. 8/10cumulus-nimbus. Walked N. above rim canyon. Many canionce droppings: Pinyon-oak mixture. Went 2 hrs. slowly, then W. 1/2 mile to a narrow red-rock canyon (= C.Escen- Cliffs dido) where no trail, many cliffs, shaded vegetation; big calces, pines - no bear sign. Flushed a caprimulgid. Out of canyon. 17154 to camp. Many chipping sparrows in pinyon-oak area. 2 August 1968. Clear but slowly clouding. Walked to N., departing 0830. Fence 0900. 2 white-tail flushed. 0920 ripe manzanita berries on rocky slope, but no sign of animal feeding. 0940 at edge of rocky small canyon Accipiter land & saw 3 Cooper (?) Hawk's pair. Called wh-wh about 1/sec., rising notes. A top cliffs 4 in pines. (Nest area probably.) 2 painted redstart painted redstart Coeper on oak trunk. Saw the black-red-breasted woodpeckers again. 1115; on ridge crest, apparent top of Alto del Alamo. 035° about 2 mi. One live oak had many acorns 7/8 cm. long, green; but much resistance among trees, many having none, & no slow change in size w/ almost altitude. 1205, 2 quail flushed one at a time, giving descending squeak """ in flight; just near water seep on rocky slope near grass dumps. Much manzanita or ridge (about 1200' above camp (7100) level). C.de? This ridge apparently between Mastro & Alamos drainages. I descended step slope to M. river, among big pines, paper, spruce pine, lobed white deciduous oaks. Fair trail lies, & remain logging road down canyon. On bottom 1245; trail up about 335°. On greeny flat, lot timbers, ae
