Koford 13 Journal 17 February 1962 Kanpur, India group included: 1 Ø, 5 ♀, 2 yrl., 2 juv. / 7 in one area had withered hind leg, / Mr. Gupta, in charge of trapping, said that Muslims trap with buried net. Hindus use boxtrap with string release, snares set on ground; a group of men that force animal up tree and then catch it (about 15 men; some- times they use net for a wall on one side). / We drove to another known site: about 35 animals. 2 ad., ØØ, one be- [illegible] ing old & apparently blind in one eye. Small yrl., but more between 4 and 10 lbs. Some 4 ♀ pregnant. No new infants. I took photos. / Gupta said large rhesus groups in Nepal but not allowed to catch. Apparently he brings monkeys from at Berkeley? More details daily day many local boys and groups. / Duskish of the grey-backed sifangs in evening several dwarf long-tailed green parakeets flew high over. 18 February 1962 Lucknow, India —drove to Lucknow in evening and We had stayed in Carlton Hotel; old style and plain but satisfactory, across road was Botanical Garden. I walked there and saw a booper flight & appearance flicker-like. Also two chipmunks (stripes on back) in trees, 4 other birds. Many grey-backed ravens. / About 100 m. visited small monkey farm of M. Sikander Begum (photo her & man monkey contractor). This in old adobe section of Lucknow. Clean walls, yard about 75'x100'. Divided with open sides, 12+ bowl cages about 3'x3'x 1½', with 10± 4-6 lb. monkeys in each. Fed grain. Seemed healthy. Women in one of Patna's largest dealers. About 150 men bring monkeys to her. We saw a careful coming by bicycle rickshaw. In cages weights. Males held a day or so for shipment to Delhi; where weighed and segregated. In street nearly saw 3 on ropes held by women; pets apparently, / In afternoon we drove NW (?) about 2 hrs. to Kheri Town. On way saw crowded train & large red-headed crows near road, 1 peacock, one
