Koford 14 Journal 28 July 1968. Rancho Parapetaz nr. Santa Clara, Chihuahua Mexico and broke up ranch. Knowe nothing of beans but assumed have to kill them because they fed cattle. Wife is in- love of Urbano yea (seste wife?) Saw skibler along roads. | Visited Rancho del Alamo, to inquire about use radio. Spys. 10+ bandtails in canyon above headquarters. At edge plains saw both black-tails & white- sided jackrabbits. Adjtrns. 6 mi. from good dirt road; about 10 mi. from "Santos #1" store. 29 July 1968. Mon. Tried to drive to El Borrego, store near Santa Clara but stopped by high river. On plain saw ravens. New lawn, greblers & house sparrow. Stopped at #1. Then to C. del Alamo, where camped. 30 July 1968. Clear morning. "Caporal" at ranch is Sebastian Barrera there 28 yrs.; l. eye blind. Administradora is Ramon Prieto, who comes about once a week, & communicates daily by radio at 7 a.m. (80+ yrs. old). Ramon gave permission to camp on ranch. Replied Davison, who said helicopter coming tomorrow, & truck today to bring fuel! I walked up canyon & N. along rim. F looked to 12 bandtails. Have scars in canyon over 1 cm. long, but green. Thought I heard a [red. dark woodpecker] large woodpecker drumming. Azm. woodpecker, screech jays, & dusky tailed ground squirrels common. Fox house sparrows common near barnyards. Thrushes range iris, shot slight- curved bill, in oak. Camped above highest water tank, in rock-cliffed canyon w/ 10' wide clear stream. Mt. top about 6200; but no road toward. 31 July (1968). Wednesday. No rain last night. Helicopter landed my lighter about 9 a.m., 1 1/2 hrs from Chihuahua, but truck w/ fuel not until afternoon. Weather bad by then, so no flight. They brought fuel for only one 2-hr flight & return to Chihuahua! Rain midway. A red flower Phlox; Ipomoea? is (sweet?) coarse foliar abundant flower =, & humming fed at there. | In afternoon, a rushing sound, & sunless stream turned to a
