27 July 1968 Sat.
A. del Mesteno, S. del Nido, Chihuahua,
Half overest. Canyon win by colin. We parked & walked down canyon to car, 2
hrs. Met a green Crestler in narrow black bands near stream; it retreated under
old fencepost (cattle?) / heard turkey calls in canyon. [Good] poor, tho a kind
1/2 ton perhaps w. 16" which made it to Ben colin; we did not try. / We took leave of
Bacaya, then drove 3 mi. S. of cattle guard & sorted, to wait out rain. Soon
a pickup came; it was Armands Reynol, and sons A. and "Lalo", who had
16+19 yr old.
ranch nearby, at Corral de los BaƱos (Rancho Panopeto). They spoke English
& invited us to their ranch house, near edge of the large low bouldery
hill N of Santo Claro, by Arroyo Palominos (lower part of C. del Tlano). / On
plain saw 2 L. gallardi; no seemed to be chasing the other. White fin appear-
antly excited when fleeing. / A green Bubo landed in grass at edge of a
gully, & a mockingbird dove at it repeatedly; we flushed and which
flew 1/4 mi. to tree where mockingbird again attacked. About 7 p.m., when
still light. Also saw Choruleter flying. / At corral dipping Hereford cattle
which had been worked earlier in day. Vaqueros branding, branding,
musk, & roast testicles. / Saw 3 man coupler of L. gallardi before
reaching ranch (The boys said that 2 shot over 100 in one night.) / Reynol
had gone to Nuevo State; boys to Culiacan. Wife, Alicia. 8 children (Lalo, young-
est). Not other small rancher too. A. was president of Rotary Club in Chihuahua.
Locals came & sang w/ guitar, accordion, in one.
28 July 1968 Sunday. Watched cattle operation at ranch. Armands said formerly
turkeys & quail at ranch; now none, tho he thought parturage better & cows
no less. Said put out 1000 about every other year, & had not heard about
secondary poisoning or restriction or use. I saw carcass of Bald
eagle on fence; said killed by poisoned (strychnine) cancan about
March; saw skull. Ranched here since 1942. They say Minavites over-
work soil & have reduced yields. Live in constant fear that good will take
have Kodachrome
