Koford 12 Journal Chih, Mexico 26 July 1968. Arroyo de! Mestino, S. del Nido walle NW of home, flushed 2 quail & 1 whitetail. I & D took trail to W. & SW, paralleling stream but ¼- ½ mi. N., then turned NW (2 mi. from cabin) to go toward Mesa de Los Venados, above Ojos Flushed whitetail in oak-green area. Brown tyrant w. ash throat in color. Good view to S. of cliffs Mestino + plain beyond. Pigeon-mangoite in rocky area, S. aspect. | Arrived head A. del Alveo, where I spread first day out (about NW of cabin), + on to mesa (Altos Mestino, 050° 3° mi.). Flushed [illegible] from flying stick nest in oak. Cabin: road 1100' above cabin. Cu- stratus clouds, E. wind 15 de. Junipers very common, & Iron Towner. | Flushed 2 separate Sylvilagus from slant-side down logs on gassy mesa. Bunchgrass to 1/2" (green), w. taller old stalks. Many Argue graze here now, among oak, pinion, tamarisks. | 1205, reached low rocky knoll near NE corner of mesa (1500' above cabin). [illegible] (?) w. white flowering some faint. Lunch at edge A. de los Arroyos, where about 200 sq. ft. ground torn up as if by skunk, w. small jute bag. | About 200 yds. E., rear edge steep cliffs, came upon apparent bear droppings, semi-solid, 38 x 80 mm. largest, 3' from bore of pine (about 200 yds. W. of pass at hd. of Ojo de los Venados). Contained many ants + a few small beetles; saved for later About 4 droppings, perhaps only 1 day old. No definite tracks found in area. This ridge should be a "natural" crossing route for bears. | 1410, reached pass (1400' above cabin) and started down to S. 1500, reached the "cienos" [= ojo de los Venados] cienos of cattle water + feed & large oaks, a good campsite. Saw = painted redstart the "warbler" w. blue-black head, black upperparts, large white wing bars, white outer 2 feathers, black sides + red breast; quick moths. | ¼ hr. down- stream to first branch canyon to NE, + ¼ hr. more to second (larger). columbo f. In bottom, flushed bandsto from same nest as once before. Still awest 5 p.m. when reached cabin, but no rain. Coyote droppings common a trail in bottom.
