Koford 11 Journal 24 July 1968 Rancho Mestero, S. de Nido Chih, Mexico of ridge - much manguito (abundant green berries), usual shot scrub oak = Varita ? 1315, rookd canyon bottom, many prair (MVZ camp canyon ?). Thustering rain. Down canyon to cabin, raining 3 p.m. No deer sign found. cabin O. de los V. cliffs altos de Mestero N 145 Climbed to cliffs & cave areas (S.) from cabin. Heard ring whistle call & saw strix owl (owl area 145o from cabin) 2 half-bunny spotted owls, out of nest; could fly 50+ ft. Two redtails on cliff top nearby; possible nest. Barn swallow in cabin still feeding 3 young. Weena (Rana pipiens) goes from attic nest. Leopard frogs common in stream. Usually 25 July 1968. Rain in night, overcast morning. 27 Todaxids in net left strix overnight (also possible redtails). The two fledgling owls within 20 yds. of previous site; adult came and perched in shady rocks rocks. Tail base 14" wide light gray, 1" dark. Ad. had white spots atop brown back. / Atop cliffs, a Citharus sat in sun. Roje manguito berries on ridgetops, thin rocky (or'ss') soil. / A winter & friend of Bea said the 1957 grizzly was El Moko, a well- grizzly known adult w/ 2 little fingers missing, & that the hunter (Barber) had been fined 25,000 pesos. El Moko was often seen in Bea Cabin area, too. / On white trunk of 10" dwarf aspen opposite Bea cabin, I saw old scratches of black bear climbing on both sides tree. / Atop ridge S. of cabin, we walked E. Mark 1-2' buck in old down, & flushed Sylvilagus there. Still overcast. Saw 2-3 whitetails in oak area. / Atop ridge w/ C. del Alamo to E; viewed complex terrain, w. stream in bottom. We descended rocky slope into pine area of C. del Alamo. Rain 12 30. Ascended to W. and N. into shell Mestero again, & down rain -> cabin.
