19 July 1968 Rancha El Mesteno, S. de l Nido, Chih, Mexico
a good campsite. Baiza said a bear once slept in fresh trough line (he has been at ranch 7 yrs). Saw hummingbird w/ green body, red bill w/ black tips (straight & more length), black head & throat / saw Belted Titmouse (bellyyi type) in down trees. 8000'. Nuthatch. Before cattle slope, wide grassy area, scattered oaks. 10335', old log cabin, roof & much wolly gone, and nearby a corral, rock well enclosure, & on ridge 50'above the "caloma" of fear. This house of logs, high ceilings, tile floor, with 70'sq. central room w/ 2 fireplaces, & once had plumbing, but now many windows broken, doors open, & stripped- last used 10 yrs ago, but building still in fine condition and could easily be remodelled as a biological headquarters. This is Arroyo El Mesteno / we departed down canyon (270°) when fair steam & down; soon passed old adobe horse stalls & stacks (old ranch - used when MV2 partici here). We walked down road; canyon turned to S. or slightly SE; we took road near fence to E., and lower Mesteno arrived at cattleguard after 2 hrs. walk from cabin; from there, 2½ mi. to present headquarters. Baiza drove us the 5 mi. to our camp at Llano in A. de los Alamos. | Damian & Flavio had gone up a little alamo's to head of N end, ascended to Mesa de Los Verados, & searched for deer sign. They found apparent droppings at edge manguita patch near water (manguitas and juniper (?) berries). Tracks there were faint, but nearly ground torn up & rocks moved (lodger?). They & 2 cowboys searched various areas on mesa for deer sign. To return, they descended into A. de las Animas, went NW, & picked up a skull of wolf trapped (a few weeks ?) ago. Erik brought in small rattler taken in rocks among manguita. There is also a red-tailed macaw, now w/ some green berries, scattered among oaks. Rain about 4p.m.
20 July 1968 No rain night. Flavio & Damian departed about 10 a.m. for Chihuahua. D. is to have helicopter come p.m. of 22, for flight 23.
Erik accompanied this trip; he said boys took long sicker on mesa specimen
