Koford, C13 Journal 18 July 1968. Taruga (red & brown). At least two flycatcher, gray, slight crest. Spotted towhee. 0835, sharp "whoop" as 2 whitetails jumped and ran (grassy oak-pine zone). Fleishen . Agave E.W. [I=hd. Arroyo del Alamo] Ojo de Bluejnr. / 0900, to N. war canyon, & side canyon going N. 6C. [600' high; prob. 8000'] up it Los Venados), w. old logging road. My ridge @ 700' / Saw Citellus (like variegatus mexican trechiyi) on lava boulders in grass, oak-pine-juniper area. Acorn jays, Steller's jays . Another pine, 3 needles, w. soft lower, perennial cone (3") 1 1/2" long; old & 1st yr cones on tree, & staminate cones. Dark rough bark. Acorn woodpecker. Still @ 700' / 2 whitetails flushed / 0930, from ridge, opposite summit of S. del Nido @ 45°, 5 mi. Continued an 060° to rocky point, low pass, up mangarita slope. Saw: Drylas fiji; est. D. = borealis jamaiensis walked on to NE. Saw swift, Pettus (black throat; creme back-chest, light w. tips below wing). Large iguanid (Helocnemis regina-like; black band throat; banded tail). 1010, my ridge going 110°; summit 050° about 4 mi. / 1015, a 25' pine w. seal chamber broke gone to bare wood, especially = lightning strike large area on top, & at intervals 2-6, or if by climbing animal. No teeth a claw maker. But gopher (?) burrowed near close dug up for (no) "yea" / 4', + 2' down. dead branch broken off. Possibly lightning, as trunk partly split; no other such trees seen. / Largest scum about 8 mm. long. / 1135, still going E., into 40' pine (3 mo needles, stiff, long), saw w. (unamed) green cover. Saw 3 whitetails in groups (grassy, fairly open). / Found Dicro coneptus ? guanco nest on ground; 4 bluish eggs (photo); under grass clumps, 3' from tree trunk. / Digging w. roder to 4" down, or of lodger. altimeter Chipmunk. Raven. Agave in bloom. / 1100, course 330° @ 700'. = Altos Mosteno Blackbird quaked in oak-pine. / Summit 050° few trees Taruga; yellow & red; 2, 8' apart, in oak + pine. Flat area w. open stand pines, w. 30 m. wide pool and earth dam, at 9000' = Mesa [= 8000' - 9500', prob.] altimeter
