Koford 3 Journal 17 July 1968 Rancho To del Mestero, S. del Bldo, Chih., Mex. these cultivated fields of Menomote on large flat plateau. Saw sparrow hawk. After about 1 mi. on plain, turned R. 90 deg. saw rosen. Black Angus cattle. After 6.2 mi., 90 deg L - there was cultivated fields. (Rancho also after Mester-Lark 1.8 mi.). After 5 miles, cattle guard, right 45 deg and on 2.6 mi. To a corral, (Gorral de los Banos) went thru cattle guard, to bottom canyon, + toward Nts. about 5 mi., (after river cross) entered valley. Great blue heron flying. Pines 30' tall - long needle, yellow Types. After 4 mi. thru cattle guard, took L of Y (to new ranch R. goes Mestero River and to old MVZ camp area, but road bad). About 2 1/2 mile to ranch - corral, said some: stalls, 2 barns; in canyon of ochre rocks (7200).(A Mestero is an unmarked beef.) Administrator in Juan Baeza, a lean friendly cowboy. Lake 50 m. diam. (muddy), w. milled bucks (Tama). Kingbird apparently w. nest + feeding young. After some waiting around, Baeza accompanied me about 5 miles up road to water tank at Lloron, 7700', in bottom of rocky oak - lived canyon. This was about 5.6 mi. from La Parita. Camped. (Strix occidentalis) After dark walked up canyon; heard owls + called - 2 came; med. large, gray face, no horns, pale centers breast (no conspic. spots). Called a long rising whistle, sometimes muted, followed by series 6 to 8 bars w. rising pitch and intensity, rather muffled and angry, sharp. Perked within 10 yds of me; once together on same branch. Later heard Arroyo del Alamo, Caprimulgus + pos well. Descent moon; else evening. Lloron 7500' 18 July 1968. Turkeys (Cocors) called 6 a.m.; + Caprimulgids; 0730 left camp and walked up slope to NE. Flushed quail in poor + rocha mix junipers. called """" (which?) or flew. Saw ralis, long tail. Went 060 deg along ridge top. Pines - 3 min limbs; are w. 3 shot needle. Oven- large armed small conic w. + bbs nuts, about 2' tall, only 07 cones on one. Junces - red iris, white outer tail feathers, chestnut back; pale gray breast (are stroked over arm?). Melkathini yellow pair.
