C. Koford 2 Journal 15 July 1968 To La Parrita, Chihuahua, Mexico year end was only inspection. Various modern shopping facilities at Prof. "Drove 5 on good highway; customs stop at 20 km & Turici (nr Samalayuca) later. One area of pure sand dunes, in which saw trocha Dipodonyx, km.92 digars, snake, mouse. On to La Parrita, bar restaurant at km. 1753, and 2.5 mi toward Santa Clara to cattle guard, where camped. Other nr. 2 cm. acanas (cactus), cenguen). Blue (nightshade?) flower w. yellow stamens, yellow composit; prickly pear, various shrubs, juniper, querce midgets. Cactuses were had 2 dry grass nest in tree (11), and gotbed grass; many lizards. White large eggshell lilac. Firefly see; thunder storm. 16 July 1968 Drove toward Chihuahua. Rancho El 45 (American, Mrs Harrison), nr. km. 1743. Avocanon bunch km. 1735. Pepper tree, mosquito, cactus, oaks near road Block & turkey vultures. / To office of Delegado Forestal y de la Fauna, 610 72 (calle Albans - Necchi store), and met Miguel Salgado Gomez (lover), Jose Damian Garcia, & Cesar Isid More (reforestation fire). Salgados had been asked by Hernandez Corzo to take care [actually had none available] of me - they offered helicopter, pickup, & got permission to camp on Jara ranch (Urbano Jara of Chihuahua; Rancho El Mestizo), Later met Gilberto [plywood co. head] Gonzalez Nuezquez, who gave us use of his house or granja at edge of town. Stayed three - hours, swimming pool, garden. Earlier, in office, talked with Hernandez Corzo in Mexico City by phone; he offered cooperation & wanted outline of program. Flavio (soils & water) 17 July 1968. Damian & friend arrived 10:15 in govt. pickup. We went to Parrito and at 13:15 started for El Mestizo. Road rocky, narrow, winding Gilda (=Primavera) was stream bed, often in 1 ft or + water. 10 miles to Las Varas (a store & a few houses). Tops canyon 18.4 mi. from La Parrita, 1hr. 45 min. drive, at 6500 ft. In canyon saw bank tail fin swimming dove, skrike, Oriole, fliebers, & others. Agave common. About 6 miles of settled small solar
