Koford, Carl B 1968 Journal Chihuahua Mexico trip (Grizzly Bear Project for the Conservation Foundation) To Delano, Calif. 8 July 1968 Departed Berkeley about 5 p.m. and drove down San Joaquin Valley to Delano. Self, wife Sue, + son (12 yrs) Chili, in our 1966 Chevrolet pickup with canopy. To Palm Desert 9 July 1968. Drove over Tehachapi Pass to Mojave, San Bernardino, and Palm Springs. Then met Lloyd Tavis, who took us to Deep Canyon research area, a rocky canyon at foot Santa Bosa Mts. Stayed sunight. Over 100°F today. To central Arizona 10 July. Drove on to Blythe, then to Phoenix and east to a few miles past Superior, when we camped at Ode Flat in Tonto N.F. Mesquite, small oaks, red rocks. Over 100°F today. To Las Cruces, New Mexico. 11 July 1968 Drove on through Adobe to New Mexico and Las (2015 Huntington) Cruces. At last, stayed with the Dos. To Thelma's mean the State University. Las Cruces, N.M. 12 July 1968. Friday. Met Sandy Deich-Bodkin, Dept. chairman, and Jimi Benjamin, entomologist, at Life Science. (Ralph Batt due back soon). Then to Juarez for tourist cards, insurance, * try at gun permit. Visited Juarez briefly. Returned to Las Cruces. Drove at La Posta, Mesilla, with Thelma's. 13 July 1968. Shopping in Las Cruces, further talk at NMSU, then departed for visit to White Sands N.M. and on to Cloudcroft, elev. 8700', for final camping check and to await Monday. Campgrounds w. aspen, white pine, douglas fir, small oaks - juniper (chestnut + Red squirrels) both), Stella gage, ravens, flickers. Overnight; not too crowded. 14 July 1968. Equipment repair + checkout at Cloudcroft. This is area where Wm. Bremer and I camped and collected for a few days in summer of 1950, new route to Chaperon w.F. Pitelka. 15 July 1968. Early, returned to Las Cruces, received mail, shopped! Then to El Paso and entered Mexico about 2 p.m. Single glasses in
