C. Koford Journal 16 February 1962 Delhi, India of Patterson Co. on Old Durgaon Road. Again met Bob Arons and George Dhawan as yesterday. Also Mr Khali, apparently manager of the farm. And Dr Subramanian, veterinarian. Area of farm about 2 1/2 acres. Wall about 9' with wire stop this. All clean, concrete and stucco construction. Monkeys kept in a long shed about 35' wide and 200 feet long, open at sides. In one side on concrete floor were two rows of large cages, 8 x 12' x 6' high, of wood with 1" square wire mesh. In cages were groups of monkeys of same size. For example, 50 4 lb. monkeys are. 4-5 5-6 lb. in another, etc. Capacity in all over 300 animals. Some between rows cages marked capacity as 97 (the only 50 in). Front row of cages, about 3' clearance. About 40 cages in all. In one cage an albino O which had been kept (from inf.) about 5 yrs. The vet said T-B tests given only if requested. About 170 positive when tested. Those ill were not shipped but one segregated and treated. In winter respiratory disease common. About 30 4-6 lb. sick monkeys were together in one cage. Farm area 11000 sq yds. (1.1 hectare). Buildings are story. Admin. staff about 10. Monkeys brought from field in bamboo cages, mostly about 3' x 3' x 1 1/2'. About 12 small monkeys in one. Animals checked by representative in field before brought in. By government rule, none under 4 lbs. can be shipped. In cages in shed, only about half cages with monkeys. Few in 7-9 lb. gp., + some large. Food given is mostly mixture of whole rice, barley, gram (chili dried peas).. Fed 3 x a day. Midday, food mixed with raw suga about 3 x a week. Vegetables, fruit, given every day. Cooked vegetables also given. One fruit given is BATAh, a 4" 11
