15 September 1967. Lake Conococha, Dpto. Arecocha appeared to be shallow, with many exposed muddy area, but
50+ huallator (geese), and various ducks + shelducks. We
saw men fishing in outlet stream with long poles. I set 22
traps by boulders and rock walls up a slope w. bunch-
green and some ducks and cushion cactus. Cold night.
16 September 1967. Catch was 11 mice, all some breed of
Phyllotis apparently. See no water. Flighted duck flocks in
morning. Departed for Pataillas on coast down dry
rocky canyon, w. gradually increasing agriculture with de-
creeze in elev. Streams + tals in upper rocks. Corn and
coas in lower. Small town, Chupiquindo, 72 km. from lake.
Continued on S. to dry roadside of Laguna de Lachay, in
heavy evening fog. Save to camp as July 1.
17 September 1967. Effused slopes to W., walking to summit
shot
when fog swept over crest. Seven falls on upper slopes +
extending down 500+ ft. Apparent viscacha droppings on
many rocks, and prominent dusting bowls on one slope.
Earth dug out 1/2 ft., dusty; and viscacho tracks and

trails. Set 20+ swap traps and a few
steel traps
for viscachar. Hamilton saw 2-3 viscachor at foot
of talus slide, well below green belt, and set traps
there. Few birds seen, but 2 adult Vultur shunted
ciffs as if nesting in area. Hard and cold at night.
Althenevery only 10-11 a.m., 3-4 p.m.
18 September 1967. My 22 swap traps held 4 mice, Phyllotis
lawnini. Caught no viscachor. Foggy again. Took up
traps and drove around to Bosque de Lachay. From below first
gate now green aspect, and at lodquarter falls were (deep
